Heat Up Your Summer

The temperature is going up outside and these titles are hot as well!  Here are some of the biggest books coming out this summer!

In The News Summer 2024

Ripped from the headlines! Check out these titles that focus on current events (politics, Russia and Ukraine, Israel and Palestine) and feature artists who have recently left us (Toby Keith, Dabney Coleman, Kinky Friedman, David Sanborn, etc). Celebrate some of the highlights of the year so far (Taylor Swift’s new album, Britney Griner’s release) and look for the library’s most requested nonfiction titles of the year (The Demon of Unrest, The Anxious Generation, etc).

Watch Our Garden Grow

Work began in June on the Library’s front yard, as existing landscaping was removed, fencing put up and the retaining wall was started. The Library’s front doors remain accessible via the ramp on the west side of the property and all normal services continue uninterrupted. Barring major weather issues the plan is to be finished in August. Once the landscaping is all in the pavers will be engraved, so there is still plenty of time to order yours if you haven’t already. The Library will be sending out confirmations in early August to ensure all pavers are correct ahead of time. Once completed the front yard will be a more user-friendly space, with places to sit, read and enjoy regional flowering plants. The library will also be able to expand beyond its walls to provide entertainment and programming outside. Special thanks go to Riggs Construction and The Constant Gardener landscaping for their hard work the last few years in planning for the space.

Library of Things Spotlight:

Outdoor and Sports

The Kirkwood Public Library has many items you can borrow from books to movies, magazines to music. We also loan out a variety of non-traditional library items. We refer to these items as the Library of Things. Each month, we will be highlighting parts of this collection.

Featured in July is our collection of Outdoor and Sports items. Need a pop-up canopy to stay cool in the sun? How about a GPS for your bicycle to help you navigate the Katy Trail? Perhaps a portable power station and solar generator for your upcoming camping trip. Look no further than your library!

Here are some of the items in our Outdoor and Sports collection

  • Bike GPS
  • Fishing Poles
  • Golf laser rangefinder
  • Metal detector
  • Telescopes & Binocular kits
  • 120-inch outdoor projection screen
  • Pickleball paddle set
  • Pop-up canopy
  • Portable power station and solar generator

New Resources for Families and Care Partners for People Affected by Dementia

The library has added some new reminisce kits!  These kits are suitable for people in early and middle stages of memory loss. There are 3 different ones including a Let’s Move kit, a Football Kit and a Game Night kit. They include activities like games and trivia around those themes.  The original reminisce kits had different items around a theme (like gardening or the garage) for individuals to reminisce about. There is also a question page to spark conversation and resources for the care partner. And don’t forget about our Reading2Connect books that are books specifically formatted for individuals at any stage of memory loss. Check out one of these resources today!

Pardon Our Dust

Our front yard is under construction to transform it into an outside garden. We will remain fully open the entire construction process. At this time, entrance to the library is only via our ramp off of Jefferson Ave. And if you haven’t yet purchased a paver there is still time!

During this time, we ask for your patience in order that we may continue providing the best library service to you!

Books & Beyond

Bring your summer visitors to the Shop. You will find a delightful variety of souvenirs of our local area. There are new books with fascinating information and local tidbits that might broaden one's understanding of our communities.

Our Craft group artists have a number of patriotic themed items displayed and a lovely way to enjoy on our nation’s birthday and all month long.

Saturday, July 20th is another sidewalk sale with discounted items galore, some seasonal, some not. Due to library community garden work we will be set up in the library foyer from 10am-2pm.

All proceeds benefit the library and the Hot Reads program.

Story Walk

Finding a safe, fun and educational activity that your whole family will enjoy may feel like a task. Leave it to the library, we've got the perfect idea!

Head over to Kirkwood Park to take a walk around Walker Lake where you can follow our Story Walk. A librarian has handpicked the book that you follow page by page around the lake until you've enjoyed a whole story and some exercise. Look for this story in July: Oona and the Shark by Kelly DiPucchio

And be sure to check out our new Story Walk in the front lawn of the Kirkwood YMCA. Look for this story in July: Jabari Jumps by Gaia Cornwall.
