New Movies of Interest

Some foreign films that may have flown under your radar are Last Summer, a controversial forbidden romance from French provocateur Catherine Breillat; Kill, a train-set Hindi-language action thriller; Evil Does Not Exist, a beguiling and subtly suspenseful eco-drama from Japanese art house darling Ryusuke Hamaguchi; and Close Your Eyes, a highly autobiographical and mysterious work from renowned Spanish director Victor Erice, his first feature since 1992.

Other additions are the delightful and conservationist humming bird documentary, Every Little Breath, a sure hit for nature lovers; Presence, Steven Soderbergh’s intriguing and clever film about a haunting told from the perspective of a ghost; and Soundtrack to a Coup D’Etat, the Oscar nominated music/history/political doc about jazz musicians crashing the UN Security Council to protest the murder of a Congolese independence activist.

You may be wondering if some of the more well-known films are worth the hype. Well, in the case of Nosferatu, the answer is an emphatic yes. Lily-Rose Depp gave the best horror performance of 2024, and Robert Eggers’ faithful, highly detailed, and thematic take on the 1922 German Expressionist classic paints on dark and adult layers.

Library of Things Spotlight:

Board Games

The Kirkwood Public Library has many items you can borrow from books to movies, magazines to music. We also loan out a variety of non-traditional library items. We refer to these items as the Library of Things. Each month, we will be highlighting parts of this collection.

Featured in June, and just in time for summer break, are our collection of board games. Board games, in some form or fashion have been around for thousands of years. Many of us grew up on games like Monopoly and Sorry. Today, there are so many options it blows the mind!

So what to do when you have a game you want to try but are not sure it is worth the money? Maybe its your turn to pick for family game night and you are tired of the same old games. Well, fear not! Kirkwood Public Library has a selection of games both classic and new. So, why not stop on by and pick one out. We have board games such as:

  • Forbidden Island
  • Blokus
  • Labyrinth (one of this author's personal favorites)
  • Pandemic
  • Apples to Apples
  • and Really Loud Librarians

View our entire collection of board games here. And while our selection of board games is not comprehensive, we welcome suggestions for new additions to the collection. You can use the contact forms on our website to make a suggestion to the Technology dept.

Books & Beyond

Downtown Kirkwood’s juiciest summer event is the Peach Festival and sidewalk sale on July 19th. Look for our tables from 9:30a to 2p with many discounted items outside the library.

Do you ponder where the books in Books & Beyond come from? They are all donated by our generous patrons and community members. The very best of the donations line the wall in the gift shop. Those books that are not placed in the Shop are sold to an online vendor or a children’s reading program benefactor. Others that cannot be sold due to damage are recycled.

Donations are in two locations inside the library. A red cart behind the circulation desk on the right and two bins in the library foyer. For large donations please call the volunteer office at 314-821-5770 ext. 1023* to arrange a time to drop off.

* Please note that in last month's issue we listed a phone number which was inaccurate.

We are grateful for the donations and encourage you to visit Books & Beyond.

Story Walk

Finding a safe, fun and educational activity that your whole family will enjoy may feel like a task. Leave it to the library, we've got the perfect idea!

Head over to Kirkwood Park to take a walk around Walker Lake where you can follow our Story Walk. A librarian has handpicked the book that you follow page by page around the lake until you've enjoyed a whole story and some exercise. Look for this story in June:

Cactus Hotel by Brenda Guiberson.

And be sure to check out our new Story Walk in the front lawn of the Kirkwood YMCA. Look for this story in June:

Beach Hair by Ashley Woodfolk.
