South Broadway Athletic Club: St. Louis’s Home for Boxing, Wrestling, and Cheap Beer Since 1899

Monday, Sept 8th at 7 PM

In 1899, five men gathered at a home in South St. Louis and formed the South Broadway Athletic Club. It was an era when athletic clubs formed all over the country as organized boxing and wrestling became more popular. The club has been a cornerstone of the Soulard neighborhood ever since. Social activities have always been an important part of the club, which hosts dances, fish frys, fishing tournaments, Big Band concerts, and Christmas parties for underprivileged children. The club became a gathering place for generations of families and friends. As the 2000s began, falling membership and financial woes threatened to close the SBAC’s doors for good, but with the hard work of its existing members, along with help from new members, the club again thrives. The history and images in this book tell stories of everyday life in St. Louis from the end of the 19th century to today. The book will be for sale along with authors Miriam Moynihan and Ryan Buckley available for signing.

New Movies of Interest

Wes Anderson’s newest film, The Phoencian Scheme, will likely emerge during awards season as at least a minor contender. Anderson’s late career work has been excellent, and The Phoenecian Scheme is no exception. It features some of his most creative storytelling mechanics and a magnetic performance by Michael Cera.

Additionally, Neighborhood Watch, starring Jack Quaid as a schizophrenic who witnesses a kidnapping, is a fairly engaging thriller with a solid string of comedic bits from Jeffrey Dean Morgan, playing a disgraced former college campus security guard who teams up with him.

We also have one lesser-known but highly worthwhile film. Eephus, a low-budget, breezy comedy about the last game between two competing baseball rec leagues is unlike any other sports film. Like a real baseball game, it has a slow and leisurely pace. It pulls off a terrific feat, appealing to both art house audiences and baseball fans. It may not get a lot of fanfare, but it’s one of the best films of the year so far.

Story Walk

Finding a safe, fun and educational activity that your whole family will enjoy may feel like a task. Leave it to the library, we've got the perfect idea!

Head over to Kirkwood Park to take a walk around Walker Lake where you can follow our Story Walk. A librarian has handpicked the book that you follow page by page around the lake until you've enjoyed a whole story and some exercise. Look for this story in September: Olu's Teacher by Jamel C. Campbell.

However, be sure to check out our Story Walk in the front lawn of the Kirkwood YMCA. Look for this story in September: Mine by Candace Fleming.
