Wild Careers Start with Wildlands!

Meet environmental educator, photographer, and nature lover, Dwight Holloway! Dwight was an environmental educator with Wildlands Conservancy and has since transferred his skills, knowledge, and passion to connect black, indigenous, and people of color to nature as an Outdoor Recreation Coordinator with Afros in Nature!

The experiences Dwight gained with Wildlands are perfect examples of what valuable skills YOU or someone you know can gain with one of our seasonal positions.

The parallels between our environmental educator position and Dwight's position with Afros in Nature include:

  • Wildlands helped him expand his skills and comfort working in the outdoors.

  • Both at Wildlands and Afros in Nature, he has encouraged folks with less access to get out and experience nature.

  • Our campers taught Dwight to see nature through a different perspective that's more inclusive, accessible, and creative (great for his nature photography!).

To this day, he is still close friends with his then-colleagues.

"Wildlands Conservancy helped me build the confidence needed to be who I am no matter the space I'm in." says Dwight.

It's a Bird, It's a Plane, It's a Flying Squirrel!

Renae Swayser, Wildlands' environmental educator, led a group of 15 people through thick hemlock bogs and spruce forests at our section of the more than 1,300-acre Thomas Darling Preserve off Burger Rd., Blakeslee on Sat., Feb. 3.

This remote and rugged region provides the perfect habitat for a wide variety of species, including Pennsylvania's endangered northern flying squirrel! In search of flying squirrels, Renae stopped along the way to climb a ladder and check if anyone was home in our flying squirrel nesting boxes.

Ranae found 3 of the more-common southern flying squirrels that day. Our conservation team uses this population data to better foster wildlife habitat restoration for the northern flying squirrel.

We are continuing our work of stewarding their preferred habitat of mixed conifer forest and providing nesting boxes for them. The idea is that if we build the habitat, they will move in.
