| | A REFLECTION FROM DEACON PATRICE | |
I’m a lucky woman. Every Thursday my two grown sons and my grandsons, ages 2 and 4, come to my house for pancakes, play, and conversation. Last week, my preschool buddy and his uncle were near me on the couch, watching a video about the lives of ants. It’s a shockingly merciless existence. Many ants live underground doing just one job. When they get old, they are sent on a death mission to the surface to forage, having a lifespan at that point of about 18 days. The descriptions got so brutal that I looked at my son and said, “Do you think his mother would be ok with this?” They both just shrugged their shoulders and went back to the Mad Max of the ant world, and I was left to think that Nature, so cuddly and pretty on the outside, can be vicious on the inside.
I was reminded of God’s lecture to Job at the end of his story of tribulation. “ Is it at your command that the eagle mounts up and makes its nest on high? It lives on the rock and makes its home in the fastness of the rocky crag. From there, it spies the prey. It sees it from far away. Its young ones suck up blood, and where the slain are, there it is.” And God goes on to describe the rest of his creations, including alligators, lions, and all manner of predators. This beautiful, awful, serene, violent mix is the handiwork of our Maker, completed on the sixth day according to the poetry of Genesis. “ God saw everything that he had made, and indeed, it was very good.”
The essential lesson of Job is, I think, the lesson of ant society. Suffering is built into the DNA of life on our blue orb and God has never stood in the way of life just doing what it does. We age, we feel pain, and the longer we live, the more our losses pile up. We were never promised the proverbial rose garden. But what is also true is that rose gardens appear in our path from time to time. The serendipity of deep love. The awe of an ocean at sunset. The beauty of literature, and music, and art. The simple serenity of a moment spent watching the clouds drift across a blue sky. These are all gifts from that same Creator God. And the spirit of a gift is kept alive by its constant donation. God gives to us, and we pass that forward to those in our care. And it is in that mutual care that we build the strength to handle the difficult things when they come. As I said, I’m a lucky woman. And I never want to lose sight of my blessings as the poet Czeslaw Milosz wrote, “The smell of winter apples, of hoarfrost, and of linen. There is nothing but gifts on this poor, poor Earth.”

In 2027, we remember that we are one body with many members, and each of us have something we can give. We hope that everyone will consider supporting the Annual Fund at whatever level is comfortable financially, remembering that no pledge is too small and every pledge makes a difference. With that, we recognize that it will be easier for some people to make a gift of their time, a commitment to join the Legacy Circle, or a one-time gift to support our campus renovation this year.
Thank you for all the ways you contribute to All Saints’. You are an important part of this body, and we are truly grateful for you.

The Deacon’s Bible Study
Led by Deacon Patrice
Women of the Bible
FALL 2026: SECOND & FOURTH TUESDAYS
10:30am in the St. Barbara Meeting Rooms on Oct 27 | Nov 17 & 24
Reading about the women in the Bible reveals a great deal more than simply the stories of a few individuals. Through the women’s trials and triumphs, the text offers various (sometimes contradictory) pictures of gender, family life, and relationships. Our modern understanding of gender may not translate directly onto the functions of gender in the Bible.
What are our pre-conceptions about gender in the time of the Hebrew Bible and in the Greco-Roman world? We may imagine that ancient women were universally oppressed or powerless, relegated to their roles as wives and mothers. This unit challenges these pre-conceived ideas as it seeks to understand the many roles women hold in biblical stories. We will read the stories with special attention to the power dynamics, including those surrounding gender, enslavement, and empire.
It is important to remember that these women’s stories do not necessarily reveal what was normal or even ideal about gender in the ancient Near East or the Greco-Roman world. Instead, they show us glimpses of those worlds from which the authors of the texts made meaning.
“Women in the Bible” sheds new light on familiar characters like Mary Magdalene in the New Testament and Sarah, Abraham’s wife in the Hebrew Bible. It also studies characters who are less well known to many Bible readers, such as the city of Babylon, styled as a whore in the Book of Revelation. Through the stories of these women, discover how gender can inform your reading as you explore how these stories relate to your own faith journey.”
September 8: Sarah | Genesis 16, 17, and 21
September 22: Tamar | Genesis 38, 2 Samuel 13
October 6: NOTE DATE CHANGE Women Warrior | Judges 4 and 5

10AM Sermon
The Rt. Rev. Dr. John Orina Omangi
| | A direct and compelling headline | | |
I was gifted these little friends recently. I thought they were hysterical. People often notice them in my office, but after quizzical expressions on their collective faces, they move on, pretending to understand. So for all of us who want to know the "rest of the story" about the meaning of Question Hound, here is one internet account.
Acciyo says on October 21, 2025:
The "This is Fine" GIF is a widely-used internet meme depicting an anthropomorphic, yellow dog known as Question Hound wearing a fedora, sitting calmly at a table in a room that is actively on fire, sipping coffee, and stating the phrase, "This is fine." This two-panel image, usually animated as a GIF, is an iconic shorthand for self-denial or forced, ironic complacency in the face of an obvious, overwhelming, or hopeless crisis. It’s the digital equivalent of shrugging and accepting a disaster while pretending everything is totally okay.
If you’ve ever felt like your bank account is empty, your deadline is tomorrow, or your whole life is a mess, and all you can do is just smile and keep scrolling, then you’ve been the "This is Fine" dog. It’s one of those memes that perfectly captures a uniquely modern feeling of existential dread mixed with a total lack of control.
Instead, may you always find things really are fine because God is good.
