Faculty members recognized during University Convocation 2022

Six faculty scholars were recently honored for their excellence in teaching and exceptional commitment to students as well as professional accomplishments and services. The faculty members were recognized during University Convocation 2022, as part of the University's 75th anniversary celebration. This year's President's Distinguished Professor Award was presented to Stephen McGuire (Management). The Outstanding Professor Awards went to David Blekhman (Technology), Michael Calabrese (English), Sara Carina Graef (Music), and Siyon Rhee (Social Work). Brenda Naimy (Special Education and Counseling) received the Outstanding Lecturer Award. Read about the faculty award recipients.

LEAD California is in residence at Cal State LA for 2022-23

LEAD California, formerly known as California Campus Compact, is serving a one-year residency at Cal State LA. LEAD California is a state-based nonprofit dedicated to advancing civic and community engagement. The organization will be holding an Introduction to Liberatory Design Workshop on Oct. 4, from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m., via Zoom. Faculty and staff members are invited to attend this three-hour interactive session on the mindset and modes of liberatory design, an approach to addressing equity challenges and change efforts in complex systems.

Cal State LA earns STARS Gold rating

Cal State LA has earned a STARS Gold rating from the Association for the Advancement of Sustainability in Higher Education. STARS, the Sustainability Tracking, Assessment & Rating System, measures and encourages sustainability in all aspects of higher education. The rating reflects Cal State LA's success in its effort to reduce its carbon footprint and increase campus sustainability. 

Silverman Gallery features works celebrating Los Angeles from the Weisman collection 

The Ronald H. Silverman Fine Arts Gallery at Cal State LA is presenting “WE ARE LA: Contemporary Art from the Frederick R. Weisman Art Foundation.” This exhibit is on display now through Oct. 22 and highlights nearly 60 works selected by Foundation Director Billie Milam Weisman from the Weisman collection and is a celebration of Los Angeles. Gallery hours are Monday through Friday, from 12 to 5 p.m.

Vet Net Ally seminars to be offered this fall

The Veterans Resource Center invites faculty and staff to attend its Vet Net Ally seminar, an education and awareness program designed to develop a network of campus supporters for students who are connected to the military. There will be seminars offered on Sept. 16 and Nov. 18. For details and to sign up, visit Vet Net Ally webpage.

The Office of Communications and Public Affairs is accepting submissions for the next edition of University Reports. The web publication showcases professional activities and publications, as well as the awards received by our faculty and staff. Submit your information to the Office of Communications and Public Affairs at [email protected] for inclusion in the next issue.

Vote for Cal State LA’s submission for CSU Photo of the Year

Cast your vote for the CSU Photo of the Year by Tuesday, Sept. 6. Vote for Cal State LA’s photo submission by campus photographer J. Emilio Flores, which features the Golden Eagles men’s soccer team celebrating their first ever national championship. The CSU Photo of the Year album includes favorite shots of each of the 23 campuses from last academic year. The winning photo and photographer will be recognized at an upcoming CSU Board of Trustees meeting.
