Staff Appreciation Breakfast recognizes outstanding staff
Interim President Leroy M. Morishita congratulated Yen Hua-Nguyen of the Department of Communication Studies for being selected as this year’s Outstanding Staff. The outstanding staff award recipient was announced during the Staff Appreciation Breakfast on Oct. 31. An administrative support coordinator, Hua-Nguyen has been a staff member at Cal State LA since 2012. A nominator acknowledged that Hua-Nguyen’s “unwavering dedication to supporting our students is evident through her exceptional expertise, student-centered approach, and innovative problem-solving abilities.” Another commended Hua-Nguyen for her “diligence and attention to details.” More than 600 University staff members were recognized for their milestone work anniversaries from the last four fiscal years. Cal State LA’s inaugural First-Gen Week features conversation with First Gen author
In honor of our first-generation Golden Eagles, campus partners have planned a series of exciting programs and activities. As part of this inaugural First-Gen Week at Cal State LA, the University Library and Division of Student Life invite the University community to meet author Alejandra Campoverdi, a women's health advocate, producer, and former Obama White House aide. Her memoir, First Gen, is a tale of inheritance, aspiration, and belonging. The conversation with the author will take place on Thursday, Nov. 9, from 1:30 to 3 p.m., in the University-Student Union Theatre. Please register in advance to attend the event.

Professor Howard Xu to deliver President’s Distinguished Professor Lecture
Professor Howard Xu, recipient of Cal State LA’s 2023 President’s Distinguished Professor Award, will deliver a special lecture on Tuesday, Nov. 28, at 1:45 p.m., in the Golden Eagle Ballroom. Xu is a professor of microbiology in the College of Natural and Social Sciences. The title of his lecture is “My Biotech Journey: Research, Education and Entrepreneurship.” Please RSVP by 5 p.m. on Nov. 22. Cal State LA celebrates Native American Heritage Month
Cal State LA is celebrating Native American Heritage Month this November to recognize the histories, cultures, and contributions of Native American communities. This year’s celebration includes listening circles and a canned food drive for the nonprofit United American Indian Involvement, Inc. Golden Eagle soccer teams head to CCAA Tournament Semifinals
The Cal State LA men’s and women’s soccer teams are headed to the CCAA Tournament Semifinals, as both sides match up against Cal State San Marcos. The men’s tournament will be held at Cal Poly Humboldt and the women’s tournament will be held at Cal State Monterey Bay. Both teams will play on Friday, Nov. 10. The women’s soccer team, which earned the No. 3 seed in the tournament, defeated No. 6 seeded Chico State 1-0 at University Stadium in the first round of the tournament, collecting the team’s eleventh shutout of the season. Men’s soccer earned a bye of the first round after winning the 2023 CCAA Regular Season Championship. Both games will be broadcast live on CCAANetwork.com, with the men’s game kicking off at 1:30 p.m. and women’s soccer starting at 4 p.m.

Silverman Gallery features an exhibition based on a novel
The Ronald H. Silverman Fine Arts Gallery at Cal State LA presents an exhibition titled “Zen Psychosis: Anatomy of a Dream” on display now through Nov. 16. The exhibit features photography, film, object sculpture, and literature based on the 2020 novel, Zen Psychosis, with words by Shana Nys Dambrot and images by Osceola Refetoff. Honors College hosts pet adoption drive
The Honors College is collaborating with the Baldwin Park Animal Care Center to hold a Furever Friends pet adoption drive on Wednesday, Nov. 15, from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m., on the Main Walkway. Dogs and cats are available for same day adoptions. Identification is required. There will also be information booths on animal care and environmental advocacy. Sign up for Mental Health First Aid Training
Faculty and staff are invited to participate in Mental Health First Aid Training. This program teaches participants how to assist someone experiencing a crisis. Participants learn risk factors and warning signs of serious and developing mental health problems, how to talk with a person who might be experiencing a mental health problem, and strategies to help identify the next best steps. The training is scheduled for Friday, Nov. 17, from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. Please check the training website for registration information.

Donate to Cal State LA Toy Donation Drive
Cal State LA is hosting a Toy Donation Drive in collaboration with the Para Los Niños nonprofit organization, which serves needy children and families in Los Angeles. Donations of new and unused toys will be collected from Nov. 13 until Dec. 15. Drop off donations at the Center for Student Involvement, located on the third floor of the University-Student Union, or the Center for Engagement, Service, and the Public Good, located on the lower level of the Career Center. The Luckman presents a performance by recording artist Chiquis
Two-time Latin Grammy-winning recording singer/songwriter Chiquis will perform at the Luckman Fine Art Complex on Dec. 1 at 8 p.m. Chiquis’ live performances will deliver a captivating blend of her iconic regional Mexican staples, Latin Pop anthems, and heartfelt ballads. Cal State LA faculty and staff can purchase discounted tickets at the Luckman Box Office upon presentation of a valid Cal State LA One Card.
