Keeping Your Pets Safe This Halloween
|
|
Looking forward to enjoying a fabulous Spooktober with your furry friends? Have you already planned the perfect coordinating costume with your pet? We all love to see festive felines and creepy canines but there are a few things you should keep in mind while celebrating Halloween with your pets:
-
Beware of the trick or treaters! While the spooky kiddos at your doorstep might be adorable to you, it is hard to predict how our pets will react to masks, wigs, and costumes. Many find it frightening and would prefer to spend Halloween cuddled up in a safe space rather than at the door. Consider making a comfy room for your pets while trick or treaters are out and about. This way, your pet is safe from being scared and doesn’t have the chance to run out the open door!
|
|
We are looking for compassionate candidates who will join in our work and ensure Kitsap Humane Society is more than a shelter for pets in our community and the people who love them!
Applicants will have the opportunity to join one of the leading animal welfare shelters in our Pacific Northwest region, where you will support our lifesaving mission to rescue, rehabilitate, and find loving homes for thousands of animals annually.
Various opportunities include:
- Animal Care Technician (Full-time)
- Adoption Coordinator (Full-time)
- Customer Service Representative (Part-time)
- Animal Control Officer (Part-time)

Adorable Adoptable
Meet Lotus!
|
|
Lotus is a 3-year-old super cute pittie mix with a black coat, white on her chest, and white socks on each of her feet. Not to mention, she’s a total sweetheart! Lotus loves being around people. She is sure to lean into you for pets and snuggles, she enjoys scratches all over, and thinks she is a lap dog (despite weighing in at 70 pounds)!
Lotus is currently spending time in a foster home, where her foster family reports that she is a very polite and calm house guest. She loves snuggling up on the couch to watch T.V. or laying on a dog bed next to you while you work from home. Lotus is house-trained and is doing well with crate training. She is also a smart pup who already knows “sit” and “down.” Lotus is a big fan of treats, which makes positive reinforcement training a breeze!
Lotus loves time for zoomies around the yard and playing fetch with a tennis ball. If Lotus sounds like the perfect addition to your family, submit an application to meet her today!

Volunteer Spotlight
Meet Karen Mitchell!
|
Karen has fostered nearly 200 kittens since she joined the team in 2017. However, this number doesn't account for the dozens of bottle-fed kittens Karen has fostered overnight because they had nowhere else to go or the endless number of ways she helps support the foster department.
Karen fosters some of our youngest and most critical care kittens. You name it, Karen has fostered it - kittens with panleukopenia, kittens with severe flea infestations and flea anemia, kittens needing subcutaneous fluids up to several times a day, several hours old kittens needing feeding every two hours (even throughout the night), and countless others. "I often say that if I were a kitten, I'd like Karen to foster me!" said Holly Faccenda, Foster Care Coordinator.
"In the spring and summer months, we in the foster department rely heavily on Karen with the sheer number of bottle-fed kittens we have come in," said Holly. "I don't know how much sleep Karen gets during these months (I know not enough!), but she always has a smile on her face and is offering to support in any way possible. Karen's husband, Mike, is also a huge help and will often jump into bottle feed and care for the kittens - dream bottle baby duo!"
|
|
In addition to always having a foster kitten or two (or three or four..), Karen acts as a mentor to other foster parents when they are taking in bottle babies for the first time or are caring for critical care kittens and need a little extra support and guidance. And if fostering year-round wasn't enough, Karen is also a Volunteer Adoption Counselor and helps with cat and kitten adoptions once a week and when KHS has offsite adoption events!

Staff Spotlight
Meet Lauren Ruiz!
|
Lauren is one of our absolutely incredible Licensed Veterinary Technicians (LVTs). She just recently celebrated her one-year anniversary with our team, and in that short time, Lauren has already made a huge impact.
As an LVT, Lauren is instrumental in caring for the thousands of pets in need we see annually. But her favorite part? "I love our Community Trap/Neuter/Return (TNR) surgery days as well as helping cute senior dogs find their loving homes!"
With a soft spot for dogs and cats, it's no surprise Lauren has quite the crew of pets at home, including two dogs - SunBear Sweet Potato and Biscuits Bojangles. And a barn cat adopted from KHS named Lizard Shaman! (She also wins the prize for most unique names!)
Lauren's supervisor shares, "Lauren is, by far, one of the best LVT's that I have ever had the pleasure of working with. Her skills are top-notch, and her care and compassion for all of the animals show through her work. Lauren is a wonderful teacher and mentor to our staff and is always seen with a smile on her face. KHS is extremely lucky to have her."
|
|
We couldn’t agree more! Thanks for being such a great member of team KHS, Lauren!
If you’d like to work alongside Lauren or know someone who might be a great fit, we’re currently hiring for two LVT roles - one full-time and one part-time. Spread the word and join the fun at KHS!

Hot Java aims to accommodate as many people as possible by offering gluten-free options to their customers. In addition, they offer grain-free, corn-free, gluten-free, vegan, and non-GMO dog treats from Naturally 4 Paws as an alternative to Puppuccinos to keep dog-lovers coming back for more!
“We chose to become a Puppuccino Pal Sponsor because we just love dogs,” said DeeDee Easler, Hot Java Cafe owner.

|
“I think every animal should have a home, and I am so glad that KHS helps them find theirs! I love the humane society and that they help the people in our community who might not be able to afford vet care. We need more of that.”
