Teaching Advice

I believe teachers should create welcoming classrooms and warm relationships with students. I use verbal and nonverbal immediacy to demonstrate my genuine interest in students’ academic success and personal wellbeing. I share personal anecdotes to build trust and connections with my students. I take pride in learning students’ names and using their preferred pronouns. I ask students about themselves and listen to their stories. I carefully moderate classroom conversations to ensure students from disadvantaged groups feel comfortable providing their perspectives and students from privileged groups feel comfortable embracing new ideas. I affirm students when they disclose personal experiences, connect students’ comments to course material, or ask questions that inspire students’ critical thinking. I make myself available to clarify misunderstandings, validate students’ decisions, or give thoughtful guidance....
