Hello Anna,
Overdose Awareness Week, August 28 - September 3, is a time to honor those who have died from a drug overdose and those who go unseen. It's also a time to raise awareness, strengthen our efforts to prevent and reduce drug-related harm, and enhance substance use services. Get started by checking out these six simple steps providers can take to prevent overdose and save lives.
In Maryland, xylazine continues to show up in the illicit drug supply, but the Baltimore City harm reduction team is working to keep people who use drugs safe. As the need for increased access to overdose interventions grows, the FDA approved a new over the counter naloxone spray, RiVive, given its effectiveness in reversing the effects of overdose and availability without a prescription.
Buprenorphine remains a vital treatment for opioid use disorder, now made easier to prescribe with the removal of the x-waiver. However, some practitioners are still hesitant to prescribe this lifesaving medication. Fortunately, the MACS team of addiction medicine specialists are here to support Maryland prescribers with each step of the process. Register for the next MACS virtual training on buprenorphine for OUD to learn more and fulfill the training requirement for DEA license renewal or application.
Opioid use during pregnancy rose 131% between 2010 - 2017 followed by an 81% increase in drug overdose mortality among pregnant people from 2017 - 2020. To improve care and reduce stigma for pregnant people with substance use disorders, join our upcoming MACS for MOMs CME webinar.
