Community Conversation with Dr. Bruce Perry
Wed., Sept. 1
7:00-8:00 p.m
The Path Foundation is hosting a virtual community conversation with Dr. Bruce Perry, co-author of the book What Happened to You? with Oprah Winfrey. Our earliest experiences shape our lives and behaviors. Instead of wondering what's wrong with us or others, this book asks us to consider what happened to us and provides scientific and emotional insights into the behavioral patterns so many of us struggle to understand. High in Plain Sight - Town Hall
Williamsburg Lodge
Sept. 2

9:00 a.m. – Breakfast
9:30-11:00 – Presentation
11:00-12:00 – Call to Action/Hidden in Plain Sight Exhibit (optional)

SpiritWorks is partnering with the Historic Triangle Drug Prevention Coalition (HTDPC) to host a free virtual and in-person Town Hall Meeting addressing current alcohol, drug and concealment trends within the Greater Williamsburg area.

Retired Officer Jermaine Galloway, known as the “Tall Cop”, has more than 21 years’ experience in alcohol and drug education, enforcement and prevention. During his law enforcement career, he was a member of the DUI task force, a Crime Scene Investigator (CSI) and a field-training officer. He is completing a scan of the greater Williamsburg area and will share the results to help plan the next steps for preventing misuse in our community.

Following the presentation, participants will be able to tour a mobile “Hidden in Plain Sight” exhibit designed to resemble a teenager’s bedroom containing more than 100 items, which may be indicative of dangerous or risky behavior.

First Fridays Sept. 3 at 5:30 p.m.

In-Person and Livestreamed

First Fridays is live at Bruton Parish Church in Williamsburg tonight. It will also be live-streamed and can be viewed HERE.

This service offers prayers, readings, and music that focus on living faithfully through any kind of suffering, especially addiction, co-dependence, trauma, abuse, and loss. Join us in praying for those still struggling, mourning those we've lost, and celebrating with those experiencing recovery. Participants will have an opportunity to light candles and write prayer requests.

Please wear a mask. Parking is available on Duke of Gloucester St. during the service.

Everyone is welcome!
Virtual Presentation: The Many Faces of Stigma:
the Hidden Burden of Substance Use Disorders, Addiction, and Recovery
Presenter: Jan M. Brown
Wed. Sept. 8
2:30-5:00p.m.

SpiritWorks Executive Director, Jan M. Brown, will do a virtual presentation on the many faces of stigma to include the pervasiveness, the types, and the ways to overcome them.

The three main types of stigma that people are most familiar with include, self stigma, public stigma, and structural/institutional stigma. The other four are less known, however, they can be the most damaging, much like a cancer, because the experience of it erodes one’s soul.  It is important to know and understand the different types of stigma so that they can be effectively addressed when witnessed or experienced.
