Overdue Fines Return
Monterey Public Library charges overdue fines to encourage the return of materials so that the collection we share amongst ourselves is “available to as many customers as possible” (Library Board Policy 135). The ability to continue to share scarce resources is all the more important as the budgets of our customers and our library have been reduced. Fines were put on pause for 565 days because of the library closure due to the pandemic and the challenges faced by our customers and staff.
Late fees on MPL items will resume on October 1, 2021. This means that on October 2 any item belonging to MPL due on October 1 or before will be one day late. This does not apply to items that have been billed, lost, or damaged beyond repair (those costs are still due - installment payment plans are available, please ask staff for help). Fines accrued previous to the Library's closure on March 14, 2020 still stand. Fines for adult materials are 50 cents per day (up to $10 per item), and teen and children's materials are 25 cents per day (up to $5 per item). Fines can be paid in person, online, or by telephone. The Library accepts payment by cash, check, or credit card.
Thank you for returning materials on time to ensure that books and other resources are available to everyone in our community.

Sweet Thursday Hooptedoodles!
Our 8-week literary and local history discussions of Sweet Thursday by John Steinbeck, a sequel to Cannery Row continue. Check the MPL website for all the details! Working with several local partners, we present:
"SOOPLAPODs": Masters of Disguise. Join Steven Webster of the Monterey Bay Aquarium in a Zoom talk about local cephalopods (squid, octopus, etc.). The lecture title is a reference to Chapter 16 of Sweet Thursday where Mack refers to the sea creatures that Doc is studying. Thursday, September 30 at 4:00 pm.
Monterey Peninsula Sand Dunes Eco System. Join guest speaker David Shonman as he explores the ecological systems of the Monterey Peninsula’s sand dunes. Shonman is a coastal biologist and former Board Chairman of the Pacific Grove Museum of Natural History. Thursday, October 21 at 4:00 pm.
Natural Fluctuations? Seastars, Urchins, Kelps, and Squids. Guest speaker Greg Cailliet of Moss Landing Marine Laboratories will explore the cycles (some natural, while others human-caused) that have occurred over many decades in the Monterey Bay ecosystems. Whether it was the real Ed Ricketts at the Pacific Biological Laboratories or Steinbeck’s fictional “Doc” in Cannery Row or Sweet Thursday, both characters were constantly observing the marine environment, looking for trends. Thursday, October 28 at 4:00 pm.

Family Heirlooms Genealogy
"What to Do with All of Your Family Stuff? Heirlooms and Research" is this month’s topic in the All Things Relative series. Many of us have collected family mementos over the years. What secrets do they unlock? Will the family continue collecting them? Let’s talk about how we might learn from and share family heirlooms with future generations. Sign up for this Zoom presentation by Kathy Nielsen, a reference librarian, educator, and popular genealogy speaker, on Thursday, October 14 at 4:00 pm. Save your virtual seat by registering here or call us at (831) 646-3933. A Zoom link will be sent to you on the day of the event.

Book Flight Book Club
Join us next week for the Library's in-person book club on Tuesday, October 12 at 4:00 pm on the upstairs terrace. Please pre-register as space is limited. Book Flight samples novels from across the genres. If you haven't read the monthly selection already, "The Southern Book Club's Guide to Slaying Vampires," we may still have a physical or digital copy available. Author Grady Hendrix's book received several starred reviews in 2020. He describes his novel as "the story of a book club who realize that their new neighbor might not just be some Yankee from away, he might be a literal monster." Book Flight's selection for November 9 is "The Vanishing Half" by Brit Bennett. Call us at (831) 646-3933 or refdesk@monterey.org for more details.

Two cards, one for adults and teens, one for kids, offer ideas for new reading activities such as "Read a book set in a cabin or the woods." When you get a bingo (full row), bring your card to the library desk and you'll be entered to win a prize! Please return any bingo sheets by November 20 and we'll be contacting winners during the first week of December.

National Coffee Day
Rejoice caffeine fiends! This week features both National Coffee Day (Wednesday, September 29) and International Coffee Day (Friday, October 1). You may think your Starbucks, Peet's or homemade java habit is extreme but it turns out The Netherlands is the top consumer of coffee worldwide. The group in the US who drinks the most coffee is 18 to 24-year-olds. Where does it all come from? Brazil is the top producer of coffee beans. Want to brew up more coffee history or coffee stories? Try the books above or just call us at (831) 646-3933 to request some!
