Dear River Forest residents,

I hope everyone had a merry Christmas, has a happy Hanukkah, and a safe holiday season! This is a time to cherish family and friends, as we look to the new year.

For those of you looking to give back this winter season, the Salvation Army, Chicago Bears, Jewel-Osco, and Shur-Way Movers are again teaming up for their 36th Annual Coat Drive, which runs through Monday, February 10, 2025. You can donate a coat at participating Jewel-Osco locations to help your neighbors in need. Or, if you’re in need of a coat, you can reach out to the Salvation Army directly at 708-848-1181

Please see articles below that provide information on where to properly dispose of, or recycle holiday items, such as Christmas trees and other greens, as well as holiday lights and cords.

Sincerely,

Cathy Adduci, Village President
Village of River Forest

Term Limits

At the December 16 meeting, the Village Board discussed an agenda item regarding term limits for the offices of Village President, Village Trustees, and the Village Clerk. Trustees discussed whether or not to place a referendum question on a future election ballot regarding term limits. No consensus was reached, but the Board plans to continue the discussion at a future meeting. You can watch the December 16 Village Board meeting discussion on YouTube here.

Overnight Parking

Ban Lifted

Due to the upcoming holidays, the Village’s Overnight Parking Ban has been lifted, from now through Monday, January 5, 2025 at 9 a.m. Overnight waivers will not be required during this period. Please note: parking is prohibited on any Village street when two inches or more of snow has accumulated, and for up to eight hours after the snowfall ends, to ensure snow plows can safely clear the roads, and emergency vehicles can quickly and safely respond to any emergency calls.

Holiday Light Recycling

The Village has partnered with Elgin Recycling Inc. to provide a convenient drop-off for old or unusable holiday lights. Residents can recycle working and non-working lights and cords in the marked receptacle behind Village Hall under the train overpass, through January 15, 2025. Please note: live trees, artificial trees, greens, wreaths, garland, ornaments, figurines, inflatables, and other electronics will not be accepted. Recycled lights are processed and sold as commodities to foundries and mills nationwide. For more information, click here.

New Year's Holiday Hours

Village Hall will be closed Wednesday, January 1, 2025 in observance of the New Year’s holiday, and will reopen from 8 a.m. - 4:30 p.m. on Thursday, January 2. Refuse collection throughout the Village will be delayed by one business day, relative to your normal pickup day.

Recycle Holiday Greens

The Village's waste hauler will collect holiday greens for composting, such as live Christmas trees, wreaths, and garland every Tuesday in January. These items must be placed on the parkway before 7 a.m. on any of these Tuesdays (January 7, 14, 21 or 28). Please remove all lights, tinsel, ornaments, metal hangers, plastic material, and stands before placing them at the curb for pick-up. Please note - this does not include yard waste and/or leaves. This collection is only offered to residents who participate in the Village’s waste collection program with Lakeshore Recycling Systems; businesses and multi-family residential buildings will need to arrange tree disposal directly with their contracted waste hauler.
