She has a Master’s degree in counseling and is well versed in operations, development, and strategic planning. Lindsay's first job in the field was as a direct support staff in a group home in Massachusetts where she met a woman in services who changed her life. From there, she went on to work in various day programs, group homes, and most recently as a Director of Child and Family Services at another agency. Additionally, Lindsay has been a Host Home Provider to the same woman for the last 14 years. She enjoys traveling (almost always somewhere with a beach), spending time with her family, and enjoying a great glass of wine or a good coffee. She was born and raised on Cape Cod and now lives in Morrison, CO with her husband, son, host home participant and three dogs who are constantly fighting for snuggles.

Supported Employment Success Stories:
Tiffany's First Job!
|
|
A huge Congratulations to Tiffany on getting her first job at
JoAnn Fabric & Crafts!
In late October of 2021, Tiffany began her first job at JoAnn's! Since her first day, she has excelled and has been building relationships with both co-workers and customers alike. She continues to gain confidence in her work and has very quickly become independent in her role. She has also recently been trained to use JoAnn's handheld devices to deliver curbside orders, and has done exceptionally well! Customers have had such a positive experience working with Tiffany that many have taken the time to write about their 5 star experience with her.

"I shopped at Joann's yesterday near Park Meadows. Upon leaving a nice cashier offered to help me right away, but due to a customer behind me needing special assistance, I was directed to another cashier. I hate to admit I wasn't the happiest, but whatever, just get me out of the store and off my feet. At that moment in time that's all I cared about. That's when everything about my day changed.
I was greeted with a smile I could see even behind her mask. Her name is Tiffany. Right away she told me she thought we could be great friends. I started to lay my things on the counter but not too fast, I didn't want to overwhelm my new found friend. That sweet and precious young lady was amazing. She chatted as she worked and told me she loved fabric and loved making things. She kindly asked me what great things I wanted to make with my new fabric. She scanned each item like a seasoned pro before putting it in my bag.

I realized I wasn't in a hurry any more. It was just about being there in the moment with my new friend. When something didn't scan she handed it to me and asked me to read her the SKU number as she typed it in. Then she was back to scanning. She was really great at her job!
As I walked out the door I felt a new found peace about my day. All my sense of urgency to rush and hurry or even get off my feet was forgotten. Actually, all was well with in the world. Yes, maybe Tiffany wasn't the fastest cashier but she was better than being fast and it was obvious that she loved her job. I made a new friend at Joann's today.
The next time I stop there, I'll be standing in line to wait for my new friend to help me. I'll be patient and kind because I'll be hoping to get one of Tiffany's great smiles and all will be well in the whole wide world once again. I won't care if she remembers me or not as that doesn't matter at all because I'll always remember her. "

VOICE Advocacy Group Features Overture Direct Support Mentor
Roy Barnes Speaking on Asperger’s Syndrome
|
|
Cheyenne, WY: Last October, Direct Support Mentor Roy Barnes gave a presentation about his experiences with Asperger’s Syndrome to the Overture Wyoming advocacy group called VOICE, an acronym for Vision, Opportunity, Inclusion, Choice, and Empowerment.
Barnes grew up in the 1970s and 1980s, a time when Asperger’s Syndrome, an autism spectrum condition, was hardly known. As a result, he struggled socially and with his own sense of self-worth without any proper supports in place to address his issues. It would not be until the year 2000, at the age of 33, that Barnes would be diagnosed with Asperger’s Syndrome after his mentor told him that his traits resembled those of one of young relatives, who was diagnosed with the same condition.
During Roy's presentation, in which he took questions from the listeners, he discussed some traits of those who are on the autism spectrum, including wanting a strong sense of routine, order, and predictability, and how it feels when such circumstances are not present or suddenly interrupted. Barnes also stressed the positive traits of those on the autism spectrum when it comes to their abilities as potential contributors to society including employment, attention to detail, discipline, and desire to please.
Roy has been working as a Direct Support Professional since December of 2018. He also does some freelance writing and for around a decade, he covered travel destinations all over Europe and the USA as a commissioned travel writer. Barnes has also been employed in retail, clerical, and call center jobs during his work career of gainful employment, proving that those with “other abilities” can be a contributor to society if given an opportunity.

Special Feature Presentation: "Jean"
|
|
In September of 2021, we had the opportunity to meet Jean Dempsey and her son Luke. At the time, Luke was living in a group home that was being forced to close due to lack of staffing, and he had very little time to find a new home. Not only did he need to find a new place to live, he was also in dire need of a residential placement that could accommodate for his unique supports. Fortunately, we were able to step in and assist Luke in moving into one of our host homes. Luke's current host home provider Livia developed an immediate bond with Luke, and he now has extraordinary care and more support than ever. It was clear to us early on that both Jean and Luke are very special people and we are so grateful that they are now a part of our Overture team!
As a proud part of their family, we are pleased to share this feature presentation of Jean, a short film about Jean's life and experiences as a rock climber in Colorado. Luke also makes his debut in the film and we couldn't be happier to see him on the big screen. Enjoy!
