Fall News
Aloha Owners!

We would like to wish all of our extended Ohana a wonderful Thanksgiving! It is always beautiful to see images of fall on the mainland, the glowing autumn colors of foliage changing from green to amber, russet, crimson and gold. It's easy to imagine a brisk walk in the cool crisp air, hands tucked cosily into pockets... Despite sipping on Pumpkin Spice Lattes as we pull out our rustic wreaths, decorative gourds and Maple leaf table runners, it is quite simply not the same vibe in the tropics!
Despite the heat and the humidity, we embrace the chance to cook up a special feast, watch football and hang out with friends and family and to focus on all that we have to be grateful for! We may not have changing seasons but we have sunsets every night of crimson and gold! We may not have coat pockets and a cosy winter wardrobe but we have our Kauai surfer girls who on occasion wear their long sleeved swimsuits... and in colors that capture a perfect Tropical Thanksgiving too in pumpkin, sunshine and blue!
Grateful for Vacation Rentals
In recent news, popular vacation area rentals have been under attack and in some areas (San Diego, Washington D.C and South Lake Tahoe to name a few) Vacation rental legislation has been passed to ban vacation rentals altogether. Vacation Rentals are not always loved by locals because in their opinion it has raised housing values, created noise, traffic, parking problems and created affordable housing shortages for local residents.

GVR is trying to change that narrative by giving back to the local community in any way we can, while showing them how many jobs we provide (not just directly, but with window cleaners, activity vendors, local shops, etc..) and how much tax revenue is brought in by the vacation rental industry. We support Hale Opio, Nana's House, The Kauai Food Bank and Women in Need. We also purchase many of the local keiki's fundraiser items for their special trips, sports teams, etc. and give them as gifts to our guests and owners. We encourage guests to give back by walking a shelter pup, guarding the monk seals on the beaches, donating to the food bank (we leave bags in the properties for them to leave goods) and by informing our guests about the different ways to give back to the Island of Kauai.

We are very lucky to call Kauai home, or for many of our owners, a second home, and love to be able to give back so that our community can change the narrative of how vacation rentals can actually provide support for a community.
Throwing Stars
We recently joined The Star Throwers!

“To dedicate resources towards local non-profit organizations that push to enrich the lives of individuals, keiki’s, and families.”

Great Vacation Retreats is a vacation rental management company located on the island of Kauai, Hawaii.

“Ohana” is a word that gets thrown around a lot. It means family. We at Great Vacation Retreats often refer to ourselves, collectively, as the GVR Ohana. Our coworkers, our vendors, our everything in-between, are a part of our ohana. That is also the way we see everyone in our small, tight-knit community, on Kauai. Which is why we pledge to allocate our efforts to give back because we take care of our family in any way possible. As of today, we have and will continue to work side-by-side with Nana’s House, Healing Horses Kauai, Women In Need, and Hale Opio.

Through Nana’s House, we had the opportunity to assist a family specifically chosen by the organization. We were not given any personal details, but were informed of items that would tremendously help their living conditions. Some items were things such as rain coats and pants for the colder seasons. Since then, we have visited Nana’s house twice to replenish their food pantry, clothing closet, and their toiletries. With the help of our talented maintenance team, they crafted a custom sandwich board sign, at the request of the group at Healing Horses Kauai. Our office location is situated near the Kalaheo Dental Group and Turtle Cove Realty, so when it was time to help the amazing team of people at Women In Need, we cooperated with them to put together a sizable package of dental items and women’s-care items. The youth are our future and through Hale Opio we are working to give them the toiletry supplies that will help them get through their day-to-day routines.

In 2017, we started a food donation program with Kauai Food Bank. With currently 80+ properties under our management, for every non-perishable food item guests leave inside the home we take them back to our office to collect and deliver to the Kauai Food Bank.

We are in the business of helping others. This is what hospitality is, after all.
GVR employee Mark Minia, Guest Relations, delivers our donation of dental and woman's care items to Women In Need (a nonprofit organization that empowers women who have been through domestic violence, homelessness, substance abuse, and incarceration).
Owners Give Back
We would like to send a special thank you to our GVR Owners of Puu Poa 105 and Pili Mai 15A, who graciously extended use of their properties to benefit the Pow Wow in September. There are owners who consistently extend use of their condos for charitable reasons and to help raise money for worthy local causes. Mahalo to all those owners that donated after the heavy flooding we experienced earlier this year! Please let us know if you would like to be involved in any of our programs.
Dream Foundation
We are friends with a company on Maui that has been helping the Dream Foundation for many years. We expressed our interest in getting involved and they will be contacting us in the next few months when they have a dreamer that wants to come to Kauai. If anyone wants to be on the list to help that would be great! We will also be contacting owners with open properties whenever we are given a request. What a great way to show that vacation rentals are great for the community! It would be giving away a 5-7 night stay during an open time. They usually book last minute given that most dreamers are not given long to live. We would be greatly appreciative of owners willing to allow for these last minute charitable bookings and intend to do will be making contacts to help them get some activities, meals and other items donated during their stay.

Watch Joel's dream and be inspired by the possibilities and collective potential we have to help others and to make their dreams come true.
Proud of our Team!
We would like to congratulate Mark Ruiz on his promotion to Housekeeping Supervisor. We have also hired two new Housekeeping Inspectors to ensure every property is spick and span, with fan and lights on for our evening arrivals and special welcome gifts in place. We welcome Isabela Aracio and Penny Troche to our team! We have also hired another Maintenance Tech, Kaimana Girod along with Gigi Gingras who is a new addition to our Guest Services. We are grateful to have them representing us on the front lines!
We love to surprise our guests with a special welcome... a pretty orchid lei, a fresh pineapple and papaya, chocolate, cookies, fresh farm eggs and other Hawaiian products.
After a hard day of travel there is nothing more pleasurable that opening the fridge and discovering two chilled glasses and a complimentary bottle of wine! Alooooooha!
Flashback to Summer
Our annual summer BBQ and waterslide at Poipu Beach Park is a great way we get to celebrate with our GVR employees, their keikis and our extended Ohana. For the Holiday Season this year we plan to have a catered dinner at Kiawe Roots.
Kiawe Roots is a locally owned and operated modern island eatery that combines the flavors of local style, kiawe wood-grilled barbecue staples with a modern flare. Serving brunch all day, happy hour specials and dinner. Check out their menu.
Horton Update
Horton had fun on Halloween as a 110 pound taco! Harley unfortunately was too fat to fit into his Halloween costume! Horton participated admirably in the Pet Halloween Costume Contest at Kukui'ula Mall and proved to be very popular with his fans!
Top Reviews from Our Guests!
Take a look at what some of our guests are saying. Here are a few of the top reviews from the last quarter that give you an idea of the type of feedback that we are getting as Managers!

Here’s what Fidel wrote about Kuhio Shores 201:

“Wow! what a view! We had such a great experience. The amenities were just as promised. We had a slight hiccup our first evening, the fridge wasn’t cooling and the internet was working but Angela was on top of it. She got the maintenance manager (didn’t catch his name, but he was A+) right over. The Main. Mgr. fixed the internet and informed me that they would still have a Spectrum technician out soon. We had no problems with the WiFi after that night. He also looked over the fridge and determined he couldn’t fix it himself so he offered us two coolers full of ice to hold us over for the night and he would have a new fridge in our room first thing in the morning regardless of anyone being in the room. We refused the coolers as we figured one night wouldn’t be much of a bother to us. When we returned midday the following day we had a new working fridge. Excellent text communications throughout the entire stay. The condo was cleaned top to bottom. The extra trash bags, soap, paper goods were very convenient. We loved the welcoming snacks, chilled wine bottle, and very useful canvas bag. We used the beach chairs, beach umbrellas and beach mats almost every day. Looking back I wish I would have packed lighter and washed a load of clothes mid-trip now knowing we had the clothes washing detergent supplied in the closet. Drinking our coffee in the morning (coffee/coffee maker provided) from the balcony watching the sunrise, listening to the waves crash and birds chirping was glorious. Will I book again? Would I recommend? 1000x YES!!!!”

Here’s what Christine wrote about Pili Mai 10E:
“I would definitely recommend Pili Mai!! We were really impressed with all the memories the place provided. It was nice that laundry detergent was provided and the pantry had some things for us to cook with as well. Such a beautiful home. Very clean and spacious. loved that they provided beach chairs, a beach umbrella, two boogie boards, and a cooler. We needed new batteries for the fan and they responded quickly as well. would definitely recommend this place to others and would definitely choose to stay here again. Close to shops and the beach as well.”

Here's what Kate wrote about Villas of Kamalii 20:
Sparkling clean, special comforts, and perfect for families or singles. This is our second stay and we love this home. Our kids have plenty of room to spread out, beds are super comfy, and the kitchen is loaded for easy cooking if desired. The home is sparkling clean and we never feel like we are living in someone else’s place. Plenty of board games for those evening at home and plenty of beach toys and equipment do you don’t have to provide your own. Location ideal for easy access to shopping, yummy eats, drinks, massage, coffee. Trails to run on and super clean pool.”
Kate’s private feedback for you:
“Hi, we really love the comfort and special touches, like fully stocked kitchen, comfy bed/linens, and family games! Plus your home is always sparkling clean, ty!”
