In a formal ceremony on July 4, 1884, the completed Statue of Liberty was presented to the U.S. ambassador in Paris as a symbol of Franco-American friendship. It was then disassembled, shipped to New York aboard the French ship Isère in 1885, and reassembled on Bedloe’s Island (now Liberty Island) on a pedestal funded by American donations, including a campaign led by publisher Joseph Pulitzer. The Statue of Liberty was officially dedicated on October 28, 1886, by President Grover Cleveland. |
