Oxford College students donate to food pantry
|
|
First-year students in the Discovery Seminar "Inequality: Friend or Foe?" led by Jasminka Ninkovic, associate professor of economics, were the prize winners of a friendly competition between the 30 fall semester Discovery Seminar course cohorts for the largest percentage of registered voters as part of the ALL IN Campus Democracy Challenge.
Ninkovic's class had 100% registration/participation rate and were awarded $200 and given the choice of what to do with the funds. Rather than a pizza party or other type of class celebration or outing, the 16 students voted to donate the funds to Covington First United Methodist Church's food pantry program. Oxford College students serve at the food pantry regularly through Oxford Service Corps, Volunteer Oxford, and Theory-Practice Service Learning courses.
Discovery Seminar students and Ninkovic are pictured above presenting the funds to Covington FUMC food pantry director Megan Hulgan, second from left.

Oxford College holiday assistance program
|
|
Oxford College's annual tradition of providing gifts, clothes, books, and food to local families in need during the holiday season continued strong this year.
Faculty and staff purchased and donated items for 12 children's wish lists as well as essential winter items and clothes including jackets, hats, shirts, pants, pajamas, shoes, and socks.
Volunteer Oxford coordinated a wrapping party on reading day, including a festive party, hot chocolate and cookies, and of course wrapping the donated items. The Office of Diversity and Inclusion's Diversity Ambassador Program (DAP!) members also participated in the event this year to celebrate Kwanzaa, Hanukkah, and Christmas with festive decor and information about these holiday traditions.

Lecture: Telling Lives: The Work of the Biographer
7:30 pm, Williams Hall
Dr. Dana Greene, Dean Emerita of Oxford College of Emory University, will deliver the Inaugural Dana Greene Distinguished Scholar Lecture. The Dana Greene Distinguished Scholar program brings to Oxford College notable leaders in scholarship and creative expression. The lectures in this series strive both to exemplify and encourage various types of intellectual discovery and creativity. They aim to explore not only the content of those intellectual and creative efforts; they also strive to exhibit the personal, professional, communal, and ethical contexts of those endeavors.
Dr. Greene served in the Peace Corps in Costa Rica, returned to the United States, and completed a Ph.D at Emory University. For almost thirty years she was on the faculty of St. Mary’s College of Maryland and subsequently became the Dean of Oxford College of Emory University. In addition to being Dean Emerita of Oxford College, Dr. Greene is a noted historian and biographer. She is the author of four biographies—on Elizabeth Jennings (2018), Denise Levertov (2012), Maisie Ward (1997) and Evelyn Underhill (1990)—four edited volumes, and numerous essays and articles.

And the best place to stop deportations, they believe, is in detention. However, when Marco and Viri try to pull off their heist – a kind of ‘prison break’ in reverse – things don’t go according to plan.
