Hybrid work, employees dealing with mental health, and productivity truths have all come to light over the last 3 years. Being a manager looks different than it was before the pandemic. As much as managers want to feel fully prepared for all outcomes – the reality is that nobody really knows how tomorrow is going to play out. This fact has never rang truer than during the recent COVID-19 pandemic that sent the globe into a total shutdown. Leaders who want to excel need to understand how to pivot and develop solutions in a graceful manner during unexpected times. Those small business owners who are prepared to deal with adversity in an efficient way stand to gain the most.

Are We Really Listening?

The next time you’re in conversation with someone think about this question for a second. Many times we're simply thinking of what we're going to say next, rather than actually listening to the person with a clear mind. If you're guilty (as I sometimes am) of this at times there's some really bad news. The other person knows this as well. It's written all over our faces.

It's in the very words that we use to follow up with in our discussion with that person. The good news is that by making ourselves aware of the fact that we're not truly listening we can begin at that very moment correcting the problem. Make yourself aware of the importance of listening and you'll reap many rewards. It's one of life's most awesome facts that people are drawn to those who are good listeners. Upon reading the biographies of many leaders one thing is clear. Each in their own way are magnificent listeners.

Do You Know Your Employees?

If you want to increase the motivation among the people that work for you, you need to know what motivates them. Answer these questions for each employee.

She ______ working under pressure. | | ________ excites him about his work.

She ___ when you walk into her office without knocking. | He ________________ criticism.

She considers her biggest accomplishment to be ______. | He ___________ working on a team.

Her goals for working for the company are __________. | He sees ______ as his biggest strength for the company.

She ________ it when I am up-front and open with her. | He ____________ being challenged.

If you don’t know the answers to these questions, you need to spend more time with your employees.
