Let's Talk About Assessment
This year continues to require us to tap into our deepest reserves of resourcefulness, creativity, and innovation as we try to meet our students' needs.

One area where resourcefulness is needed is the methods we use to assess student knowledge. If you know a college student, you have probably heard how many higher education instructors are relying on open-note and open-book tests as their main method of assessment for remote instruction. But is this the best, most valid and reliable avenue for assessment?

If you want a primer on the assessment component of teaching and learning as well as its purposes, LINCS shared, A Primer: Diagnostic, Formative, and Summative Assessment. This academic article also discusses the topics of authenticity, validity, and reliability in regard to assessments.

A new Edutopia article, Four Assessment Strategies for Distance and Hybrid Learning, presents practical and proven assessment strategies for in-person, online, or hybrid classrooms. Some are primarily online strategies, such as digital quizzes and digital writing discussions, while others, like one-on-one conferences, are more traditional means of assessment that can be easily done through technology.
