How to Facilitate Remote Socratic Seminars to Teach CCRS Skills
A recent Edutopia article discusses the value of conducting well-planned, highly structured Socratic seminars. Written for teachers in virtual classrooms, the concepts translate very easily to in-person instruction as well. The best Socratic seminars are student-led discussions that stay focused on a central question. As such, this activity directly addresses several of the College and Career Readiness Standards (CCRS), especially "building on others' ideas and expressing their own clearly and persuasively (Speaking and Listening, Anchor 1) and "evaluating a speaker's point of view, reasoning, and use of evidence and rhetoric" (Speaking and Listening, Anchor 3). This article discusses three steps for achieving the best results: preparing the students, coaching during the seminar, and reflecting afterwards. Each section holds tips and ideas. Explore the suggestions to see if Socratic seminars can help your students achieve the type of in depth discussions of fiction or nonfiction readings that you desire.
Using Vocational Theories to Support Students' Career Exploration
Many adult educators may be familiar with the My Next Move Career Interest Inventory located on Onetonline.org, but did you know that it aligns to John Holland’s vocational theory? The Pennsylvania Department of Education has a nice one-page snapshot on a few different Career Development Theories (including Holland’s). Donald Super’s Life Rainbow (related to his vocational development theory) activity is something some adult learners have enjoyed since it helps them have a clearer understanding of the many life roles they play and how those roles affect their role as an adult education “student." If you are interested in learning more about the life rainbow activity or would like to see a sample CCRS-aligned lesson that includes the life rainbow, please email Chrissie Klinger at [email protected].
