Summer Slide: More Important Than Ever

Losing the skills or forgetting the information learned throughout the year is a danger for any student in summer, but this "summer slide" is an even greater danger this year when so much of our educational system has been disrupted.
And summer slide isn't just for kids. Adult students who need to step away from their studies for one reason or another during the summer months can lose the progress that they've made just as easily; however, there are resources available that can help you find a solution for your students. Some may work well for adult education students and others may be more suited to family literacy programs and families.
Camp Wonderopolis
is a free online destination created specifically for "keeping kids and their families learning throughout the summer and out-of-school time." There are multiple camps to choose from, each with its own focus, all of which build vocabulary, science knowledge, reading comprehension, and literacy skills.
With the status of summer reading programs unknown, the Collaborative Summer Library Program has shared a large list of additional resources for parents to use at home. To download it, go to the
CSLP website
and click on the red box labeled "Summer 2020 Additional Resources in Response to COVID-19." This printable PDF includes everything from songs and printable cut-outs for young children to hands-on science experiments and ghost story writing tips for teens. There are also sections for adults and families.

Research for Action recently concluded a three-year external evaluation of the Blueprint for Early Literacy curriculum and professional development that constitute Children's Literacy Initiatives' support for pre-K language and literacy, with funding from the William Penn Foundation and Anne E. Families Learning Conference rescheduled for 2021
The National Center for Families Learning (NCFL) has postponed the
Families Learning Conference
until 2021. The new date will be October 25 - 27, 2021, in Dallas, TX. NCFL may offer virtual learning experiences this fall. Details will be shared via email or on the

COABE National Conference Goes Virtual
The
2020 National Conference
of the
Coalition on Adult Basic Education (COABE) has changed to a fully online format. It will now be held June 29 - July 2 and July 6 - 9. The schedule of the 400+ presentations and 17 networking events will be shared soon.
