Pennsylvania FBLA Update
2022-2023 Grades 9-12 Competitive Events Guidelines
Dear PA FBLA Advisers

The FBLA High School (grades 9-12) competitive events section/competitive events guidelines on the PA FBLA website have been updated in preparation for the upcoming Region Leadership Conferences. To access that site, you have several options:

https://www.pafbla.org > programs (menu) > competitive events program
OR
look for the following graphic on the main page of the PA FBLA website:

In preparation for the competitive events season later this fall, there are multiple items/documents of value that advisers need to review and could use to help their planning. Remember, each region will establish its own schedules within the parameters set by the Pennsylvania FBLA state office. More information will be coming from your region advisers through their planning meetings and schedules that will be established.

It is suggested that you carefully review the narrative at the beginning of this section, which includes:
  1. Events Requiring Specific Competitive Events Topics
  2. Overview of Competitive Events Changes Announced by National FBLA (special attention is called to Public Speaking and Intro. to Public Speaking)
  3. Pay close attention to the "procedural change," #09, regarding students repeating in competitive events at the RLC, SLC, and NLC levels. If you have questions about a student's ability to repeat, please reach out and ask the questions.

There are several documents that are suggested that you immediately download, review, and make available to your students as part of your planning process:
  1. Region Leadership Conference (RLC) Competitive Events Planning Guide for Chapters
  2. Competitive Events Brochure
  3. Competitive Event Description and Guidelines (each student competitor should have a copy of the guidelines for his/her event as they may include procedures how the event will be administered and rating sheets used by judges)

In the competitive events descriptions and guidelines for each competitive event, you will see the following information (using Accounting I as the example):

  1. Click on the name of the event for the full set of event guidelines. It is a link.
  2. Look for the guidelines and the date they were updated/posted.
  3. For online objective tests, you will find a link that reads: "Objective Test Competencies/Details Tasks Document." This is a link to the criteria used to develop the test by the national test writers, and the information serves as an excellent preparation/study guide.
  4. Review the: (1) restrictions, (2) RLC eligibility (identifies how many members/teams your chapter may enter at the RLC, and (3) SLC eligibility, which identifies how many competitors advance from your region to the state conference.

It is strongly suggested that you use the following document to help you clearly understand how many competitors your chapter may enter in the competitive events at the Region Leadership Conference (RLC): Region Leadership Conference (RLC) Competitive Events Planning Guide for Chapters
As we move into competitive events season, there are a series of PA FBLA "Learn" Zoom meetings scheduled for both advisers AND students. Advisers should consider attending, and they should encourage their students to participate to learn about the Region Leadership Conference (RLC) competitive events program. The schedule is:

For those in attendance at the SLW at the Kalahari Poconos Resort, Derek Selleck, Competitive Events Coordinator, will be offering specialized “boot camps” on how to be successful at the Region Leadership Conference. We strongly encourage students to attend the SLW and participate in the workshops to learn to “be the best you can be” when competing at the RLCs (and the state conference too). There is no pre-registration; there are no remote broadcasts.

There is much to be learned by students and advisers. Please plan to participate; register now. Please make sure your students know of the schedule and have the opportunity to register. For those attending the SLW, don't forget the in-person "boot camps."
Sincerely,
