ADVOCACY MATTERS

Our colleagues at the American Alliance of Museums (AAM) are spearheading Invite Congress to Visit Your Museum Week, August 6-10. Inviting local, state, and federal elected officials and their staff into your museum is a uniquely powerful way to show them what museums do in their communities. Find out how easy it is to participate with AAM's step-by-step "How To" guide . Now is a great time to start reaching out to schedulers to arrange visits with elected officials and their staff members. Please use #InviteCongress to share your meetings on social media.

AAM issued an advocacy on July 17, 2018 regarding the US House of Representatives' consideration of amendments that would result in funding cuts for the National Endowment for the Arts (NEA) and the National Endowment for the Humanities (NEH). Representatives in the House voted on July 18 to reject that plan, 297-114.
SUPPORT FOR YOUR WORK

The NEH announced the new grant program, designed to create and sustain humanities infrastructure, in January. Under this program, cultural institutions such as museums, libraries, archives, colleges and universities, scholarly associations, and historic sites are eligible to receive up to $500,000 for projects that build institutional capacity or infrastructure for long-term sustainability. These challenge grants, which require a match of non-federal funds, may be used toward capital expenditures such as construction and renovation projects, purchase of equipment and software, sharing of humanities collections between institutions, documentation of lost or imperiled cultural heritage, sustaining digital scholarly infrastructure, and preservation and conservation of humanities collections.
NEH’s first Infrastructure and Capacity Building Challenge Grant awards will be announced in August. However, in response to marked demand for infrastructure support, the agency will offer the program for a second time in 2018; click here for application guidelines. The application deadline for the second round of NEH Infrastructure and Capacity Building Challenge Grants is August 9, 2018.

CALL FOR SESSION PROPOSALS

Trust, Transparency, and Transformation
PA Museums Annual Conference
April 7-9, 2019
Philadelphia, PA

Museums and historical organizations have retained the trust of patrons through thick and thin, and even as public trust in institutions declines across the board, museums are holding their own. Increasing transparency has helped museums tell better stories about themselves and their collections, and change is on the near horizon as a new generation entering the field demands it. Are museums neutral? Can museums, already struggling with a host of development issues, face accessibility, equity, and employment issues?

PA Museums invites you to join us for our 2015 conference to share best practices in advocacy, economic and community development, education, and cultural tourism as well as other areas. We welcome you to submit a session proposal that speaks to our theme of Trust, Transparency, and Transformation.
