Hello June! You've made it through another school year! It's finally warm & sunny outside🌞! Plus, we are heading towards the Summer Solstice on June 21st - when the sun reaches its northernmost point & will be directly overhead which marks our shortest night & longest day of the year. 


During these times, DCNR's State Parks & Forests are "Still Open. Still Awesome." With some federal campgrounds closed due to staffing shortages, DCNR encourages visitors to explore Pennsylvania’s state parks & forests for camping ⛺ & outdoor recreation, 🥾 which are open & ready for visitors.


We have so much to look forward to this June -- Great Outdoors Month & PRIDE Month! We also have National Trails Day 🥾, National Get Outdoors Day, Juneteenth, & the Great American Campout! Learn more below!

Join the June PA State Parks Bio Blitz!!

Visit PA State Parks from June 1 - June 30 to discover our diversity of wildlife! Check out any of the participating parks & document as many different species as you can. All species included -- from trees 🌳 to flowers 🪷 to fungi 🍄 to insects 🦗 to birds 🦆 to fish 🐟 & mammals 🦊! 


Participate in one of 2 ways -

1. iNaturalist -- https://www.inaturalist.org/

Download the FREE iNaturalist App to your smartphone & open the application. Allow it to use your phone's GPS. For each species you see, take a snapshot with your phone through the App. If you don't know what the organism is, don't worry! The App has incredible software that can help ID it simply by clicking "What did you see?" The App will fill in time, date, & location. No need to email or submit any checklists; they will automatically be added to the park.

2. Submit your Checklist with Photos 📸

If you can't use the App, participate by sending photos of wildlife found in the park during June to your Bio Blitz coordinator -

Using the Forest as a window to the world, join park educators for an engaging training! We will hike through the PLT Explore Your Environment K-8 Activity Guide. Experience fun, hands-on activities that engage students in learning about trees, forestry, & the environment. Each participant will receive PLT's Explore Your Environment K-8 Activity Guide. Kayaking🛶201 Workshop

Friday, June 20, 9:00 AM - 1:00 PM

In-Person at Cook Forest State Park, 100 RT 36, Cooksburg, PA 16217-0120

Fee: $40 pre-registration required by 6/16/25; all boats & gear provided. 

Please meet at the new parking lot at the Cooksburg Canoe Launch for an intermediate skill level kayaking class. Remember to bring swimsuits, sturdy river sneakers, a change of clothes, & lunch. Everyone WILL get wet! Designed to integrate skills learned in ACA’s Introduction to Kayaking, we will be focusing on T-Rescues, self recovery, buddy assists, & ferrying. Reserve early. Sorry, no children <16 yrs. old. Minors must be with a participating adult. Register by contacting Dale Luthringer, EES at (814)744-8407.


Wonders of Wetlands💧Educator Workshop

Join PA State Park Education staff to learn about utilizing wetlands as an investigative tool in your classroom. During this workshop, we’ll take a look at the characteristics & the role of wetlands in our ecosystem, as well as how plants & animals have adapted to wetland life. Are you interested in helping children & adults discover the fun of fishing and the importance of protecting our waters? Kayaking 🛶301 Workshop

Watershed Education (WE)💧Hybrid Educator Workshop

This hybrid Watershed Education (WE) workshop is open to educators working with students in grades 6 – 12. WE is an inquiry-based, interdisciplinary curriculum developed by the DCNR Bureau of State Parks to help educators utilize local natural resources as valuable teaching tools. By blending hands-on classroom & field investigations modeled on professional research methodologies, students participate in data collection & analysis, community networking & partnerships, and stewardship & service-learning activities. By completing all three parts – virtual session, homework, & field day – participants will receive a copy of the award-winning WE curriculum & more. Register by July 1. Questions? PA🐦Songbirds Educator Workshop

Songbirds have fascinated people for 1000s of years, inspiring art, music, science, & engineering! Join Naturalists at Wildwood Park for a Pennsylvania Songbirds Workshop featuring the newly revised DCNR Pennsylvania Songbirds K-8 Guide. During this hands-on workshop we will explore bird biology, adaptations, & migration; discover how birds influence design & engineering; and examine issues that affect both birds & people, such as land use & climate change. The workshop will also include bird ID & a short hike to discover the many species of birds that at Wildwood Park. Expanding Meaningful Environmental & Watershed Literacy with Geospatial Technology Tools & Practice Virtual Course 🆓

7-week professional development series on Wednesdays from June 25 – August 13, 2025 (6/25; July 9, 16, 23, 30; August 6, 13) from 10 AM - 12:30 PM

Have you been searching for the missing link that helps bridge the gap between delivering environmental content & developing environmental literacy? Do you want to help your students understand their connections to their local environment but are limited by established curriculum sequences? Have residual COVID-19 restrictions on classroom, lab, & field experiences limited your ability to design real-world STEM explorations?

In this professional development experience, you will learn how to: 

  • Identify which GIS tools to use in an environmental or watershed literacy instructional unit that will be appropriate for your grade level.
  • Integrate & adapt these tools into your classroom instruction.
  • Share how GIS tools can be used to identify environmental issues within & outside of your district’s watershed boundaries.
  • Identify which classroom practices & GIS tools can be used for place-based learning & expansion into regional watershed / environmental literacy inquiries.

On June 19, 1865, Union troops arrived in Galveston, Texas with the news that the more than 250,000 enslaved Black people in the state were free. This day came to be known as #Juneteenth, now officially a federal holiday.

DCNR facilities and Programs are OPEN to ALL👐

  • Many Environmental Education programs require pre-registration. Explore the DCNR events calendar for details & to register.
  • Plan your outing before you leave. Learn about facilities, download a park map on your phone or print it, & review regulations here: Find A Park
  • Take care of & respect the resource. Park, hike, hunt, explore, & more only in designated areas.
  • Check the weather before you depart, wear proper footwear, & bring water. Wear orange if hiking in designated hunting areas. Please clean up after pets 🐕.
  • Do not litter 🚮.
  • Alcohol is not allowed in PA State Parks.
  • Make a Reservation (up to 11-months in advance) at a PA State Park Campground, Camping Cottage, Cabin, Yurt, or Pavilion.

 

You can help keep state parks safe for all by following these practices:

  • Use the restroom before you leave your house 🏡 Take hand sanitizer with you & use it
  • LNT! Bring a bag & either carry out your trash or dispose of it properly
  • If you are sick or have been exposed to someone who is sick, stay home
