Vesla has arranged for PAA's third Wednesday paint-out for April 20, 9 am to 1 pm.  PAA member Joyce Martin has again invited artists to paint the spring scenery at her delightful "Down Home Farm" at 100 Whitcomb Way, Placerville.  Choose from a pond, flower gardens, bridge, antique decor, etc.  Click here for the flier.

Sierra Pastel Society is having a paint-out at lovely Sinclair Ranch in Newcastle on Saturday, April 16, and PAA members are invited.  This is the fourth annual visit for SPS and PAA to this beautiful location.  Bring your favorite art media and capture the spirit of this working ranch.  To carpool from Placerville, contact Vesla at vgreenwood1@aol.com.  Sinclair Ranch is located at 641 Lozannos Road in Newcastle.  Take Hwy 80 to Exit 116.  Turn on Ophir Rd then 1st left onto Lozannos Rd. The Ranch is the 1st driveway on the left after passing Hathaway Rd.  Paint-out hours are 8am to 2pm.

Save Tuesday, May 10, for a paint out from 9:30 to 12:30 at High Sierra Iris Farm in Camoni.  More info to come.

mlsforapril50th Annual Mother Lode National Art Exhibition

We are pleased to announce that entries are open for our 2016 Mother Lode Show.  There are several ways to access our event.

We suggest the fastest way is to simply go to Mother Lode Show Call to Artists  To get to the Mother Lode Show Smarter Entry log-in, click on the "Smarter Entry" graphic on the left column.  Note that if you are using a Mac, this site works best from Firefox browser.  It is available for free download on the site.

You will need to log in.  This is a safe and secure site. Keep track of your user name and password.   Once you are logged in, you can enter any competition advertised on the Smarter Entry site.

You can choose to go to www.smarterentry.com  - and follow the guide below. This is a home page for the site itself, you need to click on Call for Artists located on the top bar.

The Call for Artists  page lists ALL the competitions nationally being supported by this system including our own Mother Lode Show.  At this time, it is listed alphabetically on the right under "Placerville Arts Association ".  Click on that and our information pops up.  Click on the 'read more' and you will be right into our information.  All the information you need to enter is on the Call for Artist pages.

This has more steps than our own website (created by Sylvia Coleman - thanks so much) BUT you have a chance to see all the other competitions that might be of interest to you.

arttourforaprilFall Art Tour

It is time to prepare for the fall art tour which will be held October 1/2 and 8/9, from 10 am to 5 pm each day.

In order for you to participate, you must be a member of Placerville Arts Association and hold a valid seller's permit.

The perimeter for the participating studios will be Eastern Placerville, Diamond Springs-El Dorado, Cameron Park, Shingle Springs-Rescue and Coloma.

If your studio is not within those areas and you have not already arranged to share with someone who is, we will notify you which studios are available.  In the past we have found that a lot of our visitors like to see several artists at one location but single studios are certainly welcome too.

This is a rain or shine event and the fees are non-refundable.  The application fee is $80.00.

For more information and application forms for tour and membership, please go to http://www.placervillearts.com

junechallengeforaprilJune Challenge

The tree challenge at the March meeting was so successful that we've decided to have another one for June.  The theme will be "birds," which should allow for a wide range of possibilities!  Please consider participating and, once again, it's any medium, either 2d or 3d.

luciaforaprilA Few Painting Notes to Share
Lucia Rothgeb

This is from my notes during the Johannes Vloothuis four-day class last August (2015).

1    Economical painting support: BIRCH wood board, either 1/4" or 1/8" thick.  Sand, Gesso and repeat . then...Paint!

2   Johannes palette for landscape greens - a) watercolor: Hooker's Green, Burnt Sienna and Paynes Gray; oils (acrylics also) Viridian, Yellow Ochre pale and Transparent Red Oxide.  Playing with variations of these pigments will provide a wide range of color.  He also uses a Student Grade Lamp Black sparingly to tone down green when it's too overwhelming.

3  During a discussion of VALUE in a painting, Johannes suggests adjusting the standard value scale of 10 values.  Throw out the two to three darkest values as they don't appear in nature.  Then concentrate on the medium grays provide your mid-dark to darker areas. If you depend on photograph's value range you'll find the darks are too dark.

President's Letter

Happy spring!

I hope everyone is inspired by the nice weather to paint either outside or in the studio. It's a wonderful time of year to join one of PAA's Paint Outs or if you are in the studio, try a new technique just for fun.

Have you selected your pieces for PAA's Spring Membership Show, April 11to 15, at the Government center? All PAA members are encouraged to enter. It's a great opportunity to have your work seen along with other talented PAA members. However, if you don't happen to have pieces to enter this time, try to go see the show. Seeing the work of other members is always inspiring.

It is also time to think about entering the 50th National Mother Lode Show. Fifty years! What a milestone. There will be some great workshops again this year. Be sure to keep some days open August 7 to 21 to take advantage of one or two (or more) of the Mother Lode Show workshops.

Enjoy making art! Hope to see you at the next PAA meeting, Sunday, April 17th.
