Vesla has planned two paint-outs for us this month.

The first is Tuesday, May 10th, at the High Sierra Iris Garden, beginning at 9:30pm.  The Garden is at 3170 Hassler Road in Camino.  Enjoy hundreds of iris, blooming shrubs, a pond, and a picnic area.  We will be joining the Tahoe Art League's Plein Air group in this event.  For the flyer with photos and directions, press here.

The second is on Wednesday, May 18 from 10am to 20m at the Sherwood Demonstration Gardens, at El Dordao Center of Folsom Lake College.  The address is 6699 Campus Drive in Placerville.  This garden, created by the UCCE Master Gardeners, is designed for education, but is a visual treat as well.  There is a $2 parking fee.  For photos, see the flyer.  For more information about the garden, visit their website at

may16junechallengeJune Challenge

Just a reminder that we are having another theme-based challenge for our June meeting.  The theme is "birds!" The tree challenge was such a success with so many people participating and bringing just a variety of beautiful pieces to see and hear about.  So get with the birds!

President's Letter
Lately, I feel thankful for all the opportunities available to paint with other artists. These experiences are not just enjoyable, but also educational, inspiring, and affirming. I have improved a piece more than once on the friendly advice offered in these groups. The willingness to share techniques, knowledge, and even supplies makes these groups so worthwhile.
If you are looking for a place to meet and create art in the presence of other artists, PAA offers several. Check PAA's website for information and updates.
  • Tuesday mornings, Placerville Senior Center on Spring Street,
  • Wednesday mornings, Chroma Studio ($5 fee), Burke Junction, Cameron Park,
  • Monthly Paint Outs, 3rd Wednesday, location of these plein air events varies,
  • Quarterly Art Camps offered with Folsom Arts Association, at Folsom Lake College ($25). These camps fill quickly, but I encourage you to put your name on the wait list. There are regularly cancellations in the two weeks prior to camp.
The talent and helpfulness of the artists in PAA is amazing. I hope all of our members seek out these opportunities to meet with others in PAA. There is a wealth of information in our association. I hope we all take advantage of it.
Once you have created all those beautiful pieces, please enter them in PAA's 50th National Mother Lode Show. This is a wonderful, long running show which should make all of PAA proud. The entry deadline is June 19th. Let's get busy creating!

Workshops and Painting Opportunities
Linda Heath Clark will be giving a scratchboard workshop at Sacramento Fine Arts Center on June 18th from 9am to 4:30 pm.  The cost is $85.  For more information, or to register, contact Linda at or (530) 306-3705.

Jimmie Clair Grann is teaching watercolor classes for beginners or those with some experience.  Learn the basics of watercolor: wet in wet, dry brush, lifting color, mixing colors, staining and non-staining colors, and the importance of value to create form and a sense of distance.  Working with a minimum of colors and 1 to 2 brushes, it is possible to create lovely paintings.  A list of materials available locally is available upon registration.  Registration deadline is May 9.  The classes meet at the Senior Center in El Dorado Hills, 990 Lassen Lane, on Thursday mornings from 10am to noon and run from May 19 through June 23.  The cost for the series is $55.  You may register on-line at or you can call the Senior Center at (916) 358-3575.

The Johannes Vloothuis workshop will be back in Placerville by popular demand August 7-11, 2016.  He will be doing a free demo in conjunction with the Mother Lode International Exhibition on Sunday, August 7, from 3pm to 5pm at the Shakespeare Club in Placerville.  This year's workshop will be both classroom and plein air in and around the Placerville area.

We have a few slots left for the 2016 workshop, so contact Judith Perry at 530 621-1614 or to sign up before the class fills up as it did last year.  You can see the flier  here.
