ELEMENTAL by Tobi Kahn
Curated by Beth Giacummo
November 19, 2022 – January 29, 2023
Museum Open:
Thursday - Friday 2:00 – 7:00 PM
Saturday - Sunday 1:00 – 5:00 PM
Patchogue Arts Council • Museum of Contemporary Art L.I. is excited to present a special solo exhibition ELEMENTAL by Tobi Kahn.
This exhibition will be on view November 19, 2022 – January 29, 2023.
The exquisite surfaces of the works in ELEMENTAL, in their complex textures, are an invitation to the viewer to navigate and explore the intensity of the natural world, setting the direction for an individual path of discovery. The subtle, captivating glow of each piece, with its blooms and bursts of color, evokes familiar landforms and transformational shapes. Disentangling distractions from nature, Khan leaves the essence of beauty allowing the images to present themselves as structure and form, providing the opportunity for contemplation.
These works are a reminder that all we love in nature is at risk. The power of the images stands in contrast to the fragility of what is being summoned, a tension that compels us to consider our relationship to nature and our impact on the environment. In Elemental, Kahn offers his work as a profound guide to the correspondence between our inner selves, the natural world—and beyond.

View from Above
Alex Ferrone • Tony Ingrisano • Winn Rea
Curated by John Cino
February 11 – April 9, 2023
Reception: February 11, 2023, 5:00 - 7:00PM
Coffee with a Curator: March 4, 2023, from 11:00 AM - 12:00PM (In person and on Zoom)
Since the ancients, people have wondered what the landscape looks like from above. Working in different media, the artists of View from Above offer their visions of the surface of our planet.
Photographer Alex Ferrone takes her images in flight from a helicopter. Avoiding referential imagery, she observes surfaces and forms in creating “natural abstractions” of land and water. Her works consider the fluidity of land and sand as they are shaped by currents. The opacity of land is played against both the reflectivity and transparency of water.
In drawings and paintings, Tony Ingrisano considers the interface between human infrastructure: buildings, utilities, and transportation, and the natural geography into which they must fit. He keeps his feet on the ground and derives his imagery from maps of all kinds.
The original cartographic abstractions are further abstracted through color, rearrangement, and an interplay of organic and geometric forms. Winn Rea literally keeps her feet on the ground. Her mixed media works are inspired by places she has hiked. In her mixed media reliefs USGS topological maps are transferred onto birch ply where they are

Big Head Todd and The Monsters 2/14/23 have quietly become an American institution following three and a half decades of writing, recording, and touring (totaling over 3,500 performances). After countless sold-out shows in amphitheaters and on the high seas, beaming their tunes to outer space (literally), earning the endorsement of everyone from Robert Plant to The Denver Broncos, and tallying tens of millions of streams, Big Head Todd and The Monsters cite the friendships formed in the crowd among their proudest accomplishments. Their seminal 1993 breakout Sister Sweetly was powered by staples “Broken Hearted Savior,” “It’s Alright,” and “Bittersweet." Fast forward to 2023 and the Colorado quartet — Todd Park Mohr [vocals, guitar, keys, sax, harmonica], Brian Nevin [drums, percussion], Rob Squires [bass, vocals], and Jeremy Lawton [ guitar, keys, vocals, steel guitar ] — continue to unite audiences.
Tickets $49-$69 including fees

CORSAGE
Empress Elizabeth of Austria is idolized for her beauty and renowned for inspiring fashion trends. But in 1877, 'Sissi' celebrates her 40th birthday and must fight to maintain her public image by lacing her corset tighter and tighter. While Elizabeth's role has been reduced against her wishes to purely performative, her hunger for knowledge and zest for life makes her more and more restless in Vienna. She travels to England and Bavaria, visiting former lovers and old friends, seeking the excitement and purpose of her youth. With a future of strictly ceremonial duties laid out in front of her, Elizabeth rebels against the hyperbolized image of herself and comes up with a plan to protect her legacy.
"As a mood piece, it’s striking." — Moira MacDonald, Seattle Time
