A Collection of Poems on Vietnam Inspires Artwork by a Dozen Providence Art Club Members

Bruce Berger served in Vietnam in 1970 but didn’t make it home mentally or emotionally until 50 years later. His ticket? Poetry. Only by writing poems about his stormy memories—the invisible but painful fragments of that war—could he begin to shed the straitjacket of his PTSD. Bruce’s poetry resulted in an award-winning chapbook, Fragments: The Long Coming Home from Vietnam, that was illustrated by a dozen PAC artists and designed by Club member Nickerson Miles.

All Club members and their guests are invited to attend a free event celebrating the book on Saturday, October 16, 5–7 p.m. in the studio classroom. With the artwork on display, Bruce will read selected poems, followed by a discussion with the artists about how poetry can inspire art. Refreshments will be served. Members are encouraged to invite any veterans they think might benefit from the reading.
