Conservation District Week 2020

The Pennsylvania State Senate and House of Representatives have declared May 3-9, 2020, as "Conservation District Week." During Conservation District Week, districts across the state are encouraged to hold events for legislators. This is an opportunity to showcase the projects your conservation district works on every day that improve the lives of your county's citizens.
The Capitol Legislative Day will be Wednesday, May 6. All districts are welcome to join PACD in Harrisburg to educate our elected officials on conservation district activities. If you come to Harrisburg, we will schedule meetings with your elected House and Senate members. We will also schedule a meeting with appropriations staff and the Governor's office.
Conservation District Week is also an opportunity to thank members of the PA House and Senate, as well as the Governor, for supporting the districts by providing the funds necessary to preserve and protect our Commonwealth's natural resources through the budgetary process.

Chester County Conservation District Holds NPDES Workshop

On Thursday, February 20, 2020, Chester County Conservation District (CCCD) Urban Team Leader Gordon Roscovich and District Engineer Molly Deger gave a presentation about the December 2019 National Pollutant Discharge Elimination System (NPDES) permit updates to a full room of 180 design professionals at a facility outside of Coatesville, PA.
The venue and presentation logistics were coordinated by Chester County Engineers,  a local membership-based organization, which agreed to host an open forum for CCCD to give a 2.5-hour presentation on the updates. Initial survey responses have been positive, and recommendations for things to change next time are to make it longer and to do a follow-up in six months or more with lessons learned at that point.
A PDF of the PowerPoint slides is available here  or if you would like the PowerPoint file for any use please reach out to Gordon or Molly at CCCD.

March Webinar to Focus on Land Management Certification

The next National Association of Conservation District's Urban and Community Conservation webinar will be held from Noon-1:00 p.m. on March 19, 2020. The topic is Land Management Certification Programs.
The Waldo Soil & Water Conservation District in Maine offers district certification for landowners who are implementing conservation practices. It works on larger and smaller scales, including conservation farm and forest certification, and eco-landscape certification for residential properties. Owners receive assistance on-site, resources to implement conservation practices (guides, checklists) and a certification evaluation, certificate, and sign.
Michigan's Agriculture Environmental Assurance Program (MAEAP) is an innovative, proactive program that helps farms of all sizes and all commodities voluntarily prevent or minimize agricultural pollution risks. MAEAP was developed by a coalition of farmers, commodity groups, state and federal agencies, and conservation and environmental groups. Conservation districts help promote the program and conduct on-site evaluations.
There is no cost to participate in the webinar, but space is limited. Registration will be accepted on a first-come, first-served basis. Click here to register.

2020 NACD Stewardship Week Resources Now Available

This year, the National Association of Conservation Districts is celebrating its 65th Annual Stewardship Week from April 26-May 3, 2020, focusing on the theme, "Where Would We BEE Without Pollinators?"
Stewardship Week gives conservation districts the opportunity to extend the reach of their education programs and educate future leaders on the significance of natural resource conservation. This year's theme raises awareness on the importance of enhancing native pollinator habitats and protecting against pollinator declines. Pollinators form the foundation of a healthy and sustainable future for food and the environment, but in recent years they have shown concerning signs of decline.
Be sure to visit NACD's Stewardship Week webpage to learn more about this year's Stewardship Week and find resources to help you plan a successful event in your own community.
