Senator Rand Paul Holds Regional Forum
|
Senator Paul visited the PADD on October 1st to host a Regional Forum. Citizens from the 8-county/18-city region were able to hear a Washington DC update and then were able to ask questions about issues impacting them locally and regionally. We always appreciate it when Senator Paul visits us and continue to be grateful not only for his public service, but also for that of his excellent staff.

KYTC Office of Transportation Delivery
Executive Director Eric Perez Speaks to Board
|
At the PADD's October Board of Directors' Meeting, Eric Perez, Executive Director of the Office of Transportation Delivery within the Kentucky Transportation Cabinet, spoke to the Board about the value of transit services, particularly as they impact health, workforce, and economic development in each community of our region. Mr. Perez also spoke to how the depletion of toll credits will negatively impact the finances of transit agencies in the future.
The October Board Meeting also provided an opportunity for the Board to learn more about transit services in the Purchase. For example, the Purchase Area Regional Transit Providers, including Fulton County Transit Authority, Murray/Calloway Transit, and Paducah Area Transit System, provided 526,236 rides last year, for a total of 3,417,520 miles driven, with 154 vehicles, and 163 staff. For additional information about transit services in our region, contact Bjarne Hansen at the PADD at 270-251-6161.

KY Education & Workforce Cabinet Secretary Derrick Ramsey Announces State & Federal Funding for Murray Career Discovery Center
|
Local, federal, and state officials, along with many local and regional partners, came together in Murray on October 24th to hear an announcement from Kentucky Cabinet for Education and Workforce Secretary Derrick Ramsey. Secretary Ramsey announced $1.9 million in National Dislocated Worker Grant funds and another $648,000 in Rapid Response Additional Assistance funds to the West Kentucky Workforce Board. Thanks to these funds, a special dislocated worker transition center, the Murray Career Discovery Center, will be able to serve dislocated workers and meet the increased demand for Workforce Innovation and Opportunity Act (WIOA) employment career services, with the goal to reeemploy laid off workers and enhance their training, employability, and earnings potential.
The West Kentucky Workforce Board, working in partnership with the Murray-Calloway County Economic Development Corporation, applied for these funds immediately following the announcement of the plant closure and the funds were approved in record time.
And speaking of partnerships, the Career Discovery Center will be located on the Murray State University (MSU) campus, in Heritage Hall, at 926 North 16th Street.
For more information, contact West Kentucky Workforce Board Executive Director Sheila Clark at 270-886-9484 or PADD Associate Director of Workforce, Cissy Fox at 270-251-6140.

November is National Caregiver Month
|
Did you know that November is National Caregiver Month? Did you know the PADD has a federally-funded Family Caregiver Program? We encourage Family Caregivers to ask questions, explore options, and share in the care decisions that affect the health and well-being of their loved ones. Family Caregiving is stressful, but the more you know, the more confident and capable you will be when providing care. So, this November, during National Family Caregiver Month, take time to #BeCareCurious. For more information, contact Mandy Jenkins at the PADD at 270-251-6130.

UK Center for Excellence in Rural Health
Hosts Listening Session at PADD
|
The UK Center for Excellence in Rural Health (CERH) was established by state legislation in 1990 to address health disparities in rural Kentucky, including a chronic shortage of health professionals and residents' poor health status. The Center is located in Hazard, Kentucky and has worked primarily in Appalachia, but now is making a concerted effort to expand their services to the western part of the state. On October 30th, CERH hosted a listening session for community health leaders to hear about local efforts and to offer their support. We look forward to working with CERH in the very near future to improve health outcomes in the Purchase.
