Welcome to the Make Portuguese Count™ in the 2020 Census E-newsletter!

This is the first issue of the PALCUS E-newsletter dedicated specifically to the Make Portuguese Count™ Campaign. Here you will find all the latest news about the Census campaign designed for our Portuguese community across the United States plus timely information about the 2020 U.S. Census in general.

We will post information about job opportunities with the Census Bureau, how to be counted as Portuguese, how to sign up as an Affiliated Organization, how to locate your Area Campaign Captain and frequently asked questions.

The campaign seeks to reach out to over 650 civic, social, faith-based and academic Portuguese-American groups from coast to coast to register as "Affiliated Organizations" for the campaign and engage their members.  Area Campaign Captains, trusted members of their own communities, are volunteering to work with them to provide information and materials.

Do you have a question?  If we don't have the answer we will find out through our Partnership Coordinator, Ronald E. Brown.

About Make Portuguese Count™
What is Make Portuguese Count™ about?

PALCUS has launched a national campaign to encourage the participation of Portuguese-Americans in the 2020 U.S. Census under the tagline Make Portuguese Count™.

Why is this so important?
  • Funding for schools, public safety and roads, highways and bridges in the communities where Portuguese live is determined by population.
  • Businesses decide where to set up their headquarters and outlets based on U.S. Census data.
  • Congressional districts are determined by population.
  • For us as Portuguese specifically, our strength is in our numbers in local, state and federal elections. Elected officials respond to the fact that Portuguese-American citizens are numerous in their districts and vote at a higher level by approximately 20% more than the national average (Scott, PALCUS Index National Survey, 2017).
  • By writing in "Portuguese" in the Race/Origin question, we can be counted by city/town, county, state and national totals.
Introducing the PALCUS National Complete Count Committee
PALCUS National Complete Count Committee

PALCUS has been working with U.S. Census Bureau to establish the first national Complete Count Committee in the history of the bureau. This campaign has the full support of the U.S. Census Bureau through its Partnership Coordinator Ronald E. Brown.

Ordinarily, Complete Count Committees are formed within states and municipalities with the oversight of each of the Census Bureau's six district offices. Because of its national reach, PALCUS has been invited by the bureau to form this national CCC to appeal to Portuguese-Americans from coast to coast to ensure that each resident of the United States who identifies as Portuguese origin is counted.

In addition, PALCUS is a member-driven non-profit organization that depends on membership dues and fundraising events to fund its operations.  Members of the all-volunteer board of directors donate their time and personal funds for travel, lodging and tickets to attend networking events and planning sessions so our administrative costs are relatively low but nonetheless critical to doing business on a daily basis.
