Dear MISD Parents,

We are three weeks away from Thanksgiving Break. Thank you for your help and support keeping students focused on academics and attendance during this holiday season.

The first cold front of the season is expected to hit this weekend, and while we are not expecting the weather to affect school next week, we have finalized our winter weather notification procedures for this year. In the event of a delayed start or cancellation, you will be notified via phone call, text message, and email. We will also post the information to MISD's social media pages and notify the local media outlets. Campuses have adjusted grade level and bell schedules and will post these on their websites.

I would like to remind you that early voting is currently underway through November 3. The polls will be open this Saturday from 7:00 a.m.-7:00 p.m. and Sunday from

1:00 p.m.-7:00 p.m. Click here for location details.

Earlier this week we had the honor of welcoming American author and businesswoman, Candy Carson, to five of our schools to commence the grand openings of the Ben Carson Reading Rooms! MISD now has seven Ben Carson Reading Rooms thanks to Dr. Ben & Candy Carson, sponsors Mr. & Mrs. Stallings, and First Methodist Church. I am so thankful for these special places that will allow our students to escape and enjoy all of the adventures reading brings to each of them.

This week, we also had the privilege of having author Eric Litwin present an enjoyable program to a few of our schools including Parker, Bunche, Travis, and Fannin Elementary Schools. Eric Litwin is known for the amazing collection of Pete the Cat books. Thank you Mr. Litwin, for giving our students a fun-filled day of music and reading and to Trinity School of Midland, Maverick Engineers and the Stuart Smith Law Firm for making this event possible.

Good luck and safe travels to the Midland High Marching Band as they compete in the UIL 6A State Marching Contest in San Antonio on Monday! We are #MISDProud of all of these band members.

Congratulations to the Legacy High School Lady Rebels volleyball team for making it to the playoffs! Legacy will host El Paso Eastlake on Tuesday, October 31st at LHS beginning at 6:00 p.m.

Next Thursday, November 2, Bowie Fine Arts Academy will have their 6th Grade Reader's theatre performance at 5:00 p.m. We hope you will make plans to attend.

Tonight is the crosstown football game between the Legacy High Rebels and the Midland High Bulldogs! It is going to be a great night for football for MISD Athletics. Kickoff is at 7:00 p.m. During the pre-game, we will be honoring this year's Midland ISD Hall of Legends inductees. We are hoping for a sold out crowd, and I hope to see you there!

Have a wonderful weekend!

Stephanie D. Howard, Ed.D.

Superintendent, Midland ISD
