Dear MISD Parents,

Congratulations to all 121 of our Legacy High School students who were inducted into the National Honor Society this week! This brings the total NHS honorees this year to 249, and that does not count Early College High School at Midland College recipients who will be inducted November 7! I am so proud of these inductees for their work and commitment to academic excellence.

Our first Academic Decathlon meet of the year is coming up Saturday, October 26 at Odessa High School! MISD has a renewed emphasis on competing academically and we are already building a mindset of success in these areas!

What a pleasure it was to accept the generous donation of a Ben Carson Reading Room at Jones Elementary School this week. This brings the total number of these special literary spaces at MISD to four! These rooms provide an enclave for students to explore books and gain appreciation for the power of reading! Thank you to the generous donors who made this possible!

As a reminder, there is NO SCHOOL for students this coming Monday and Tuesday, October 14 and 15. District offices will be open these days as our team participates in professional development, but students are off!

In sports, it is homecoming week for Legacy High School! I enjoyed seeing so many of you at yesterday's homecoming parade. The Rebels host San Angelo Central High School tonight at 7:00. Midland High School starts its district season on the road tonight against Wolfforth Frenship High School.

It was a great showing for all of our teams at the district cross country meet in Lubbock. Legacy High School (pictured below) won the district championship for both boys and girls. Midland High School Senior Joey Almanza finished second individually for the boys, and Legacy High School Sophomore finished second in the girls race. Young Women's Leadership Academy wrapped up its first ever varsity season this week at the district track meet in Lubbock. Way to go, ladies!!

The Rebels tennis team has advanced in the playoffs after a big win this week in Abilene. Legacy High School was led by Junior Andre Perez, Sophomore Bryson Powell, and others. Next up, the Rebels face Southlake Carroll High School Tuesday in Abilene.

Midland High School earned the win in the crosstown showdown in volleyball last week, as the Bulldogs took the match three games to two. Players from both teams shined bright, including Midland High School Junior Lillian Earl (pictured) and Legacy High School Senior Josie Griffin. The Rebels are home tonight at 5:00 against San Angelo Central High School, while the Lady Dawgs look to stay unbeaten in district on the road against Wolfforth Frenship High School.

Another busy week in store for our Fine Arts programs. It was a great night Tuesday, as the orchestras of Midland High School, Midland Freshman High School, San Jacinto Junior High School and Goddard Junior High School came together for their first combined concert (pictured) of the year! Congrats to our Legacy High School and Midland High School singers who advanced to Pre-Area at last week's auditions! The All-Region concert is set for November 2! Good luck to our junior high choirs who audition for All-Region honors this weekend in Odessa! Mark your calendar for a true #MadeinMISD event as the Legacy High School Alumni Choir will hold its annual scholarship concert October 20! You can find a complete schedule on the MISD Fine Arts Calendar.

The next legislative session is fast approaching, and we are already working with elected officials to address school funding issues. We have all felt the pinch of inflation over the past few years, but as you can see from the chart below, the amount of funding per student allocated by the state has stayed the same, even as the cost to educate them rises. In fact, the per-student rate has not been adjusted in more than 10 years. Some of the issues we are facing are summarized here.

Have a wonderful weekend!

Stephanie D. Howard, Ed.D.

Superintendent, Midland ISD

CAREER EXPLORATION DAY

MISD needs you to volunteer for Career Exploration Day! We are inviting parents, professionals, and local business and industry partners to spend just 15 minutes talking to a group of 8th graders about their careers, and skills and education needed for various professions. This real-world exposure can influence students' education choices and help them build connections for their future!

This year's Career Exploration Day is Wednesday, November 13! (The deadline to sign up is November 6.)

CELEBRATIONS

Midland ISD takes our traditions seriously! Last year, Midland High received statewide attention for creating a 10-foot-tall homecoming mum. This year, Legacy High floral design students created this mum that measures a full 18 feet! Crews had to use a lift to mount the display

We are always looking to highlight the great things our students, staff, and alumni are doing! This can include awards, promotions, graduations, retirements, or anything else worth celebrating! Let us know! Email details to communications@midlandisd.net.
