We know that students, like many in our community, are following traumatic events in the Twin Cities, including the loss of life of Daunte Wright in Brooklyn Center and the trial of Derek Chauvin. Over the past few weeks we’ve been intentional about providing support for students and staff. We are aware that there is a state-wide, student-organized walkout planned for Monday, April 19 for solidarity against racial injustice.
While we wholeheartedly respect every individual’s right to peaceful assembly and free expression, our top priority is to provide a safe teaching and learning environment for all. Having large numbers of students walk off campus has some safety risks and impacts students’ learning.
Because we are aware that students may choose to participate in this walkout, we would like that to happen in the safest and most positive manner possible. Principals are working with student leaders who are organizing the planned walk out, to make certain that there is a plan that prioritizes student safety. Principals will communicate with parents/guardians to keep them informed.
Parents/guardians, we want to support you as you may choose to discuss these events with your family. With news and social media providing up-to-the-moment information, many students are aware and engaged. Please find links to resources below that may help your family have conversations about sensitive topics.
