PARMA Member Spot Light
Meet Tanesha Welch
The story of my path into Risk Management (RM) is one of unforeseen circumstances. RM was not my initial choice during my undergrad studies. I had a passion for Human Resources. My forte consisted of employee administration, training and development, and recruitment. Outside of my normal day to day assignments at work, I would spend my personal time mostly helping people prepare for gainful employment by critiquing their employment portfolios and assisting them with marketing themselves to potential employers. This is what I loved to do!
It was not until shortly after completing my graduate program and obtaining my MBA in Human Resource Management that the position of Risk Analyst was introduced at my place of employment. As an individual that loves to be challenged and learn new things, I applied, and was offered the position. Not having much knowledge about RM, our CFO shared with me the PARMA site. I remember her saying, "This PARMA Association looks like a good place to continue to develop your risk knowledge, and it doesn't hurt that their membership cost is very reasonable." So I began my participation with PARMA.

PARMA Calendar at a Glance
|
The PARMA website continues to evolve, and new resources are being added frequently. Most of our resources do require member login to view and access.
Some resources to remind members about include the following:
- Member-to-Member Forum - This is a new feature that we would like members to start using as a member-to-member communication resource.
- Profile Updates - Members can once again view and update their membership profile information and see a history of PARMA event attendance.
- Video Archive of key conference sessions - The PARMA Board has decided to video record certain sessions at each conference. The 2018 conference marks the first time. This resource library will continue to grow.
- Subject Matter Experts - There are different resource pages for each subject of interest (e.g., Workers' Compensation, Human Resources, Liability, etc.). Simply select the subject of interest from the Resource drop down menu and a roster of PARMA members who are available as a resource is available on that subject page.
- Newsletter Archive

PARMA Chapters Seek Your Help
PARMA Chapters are seeking volunteers. Involvement can be at varying levels of time commitment, comfort level and responsibility. Simply reach out to your chapter officers to let them know more about your interest, talent and available time commitment and your chapter leaders will match you up with ways you can help.
Examples of volunteer opportunities include:
- identifying a future chapter event speaker
- hosting or organizing a networking event
- holiday party decorating
- making a connection with a potential sponsor
- sharing membership growth ideas
- being a new member ambassador
- creating an event or membership promotion flyer
- chapter event greeter
- event setup assistance
PARMA volunteers have one thing in common. They agree that by volunteering they received more than they give in the way of both personal and professional growth.
"Everybody can be great. Because anybody can serve. You don't have to have a college degree to serve. You don't have to make your subject and your verb agree to serve.... You don't have to know the second theory of thermodynamics in physics to serve. You only need a heart full of grace. A soul generated by love."
~Martin Luther King, Jr.
If you haven't considered it, think about reaching out to your local chapter to learn ways that you can volunteer. You will be richer for it!

Susan Eldridge PARMA Conference Scholarship
PARMA's vision is to assist Public Entity Risk Managers in achieving success in their careers and to provide Public Entities with the support they need to make their Risk Managers successful. PARMA has designed a conference to provide quality education and training in all the aspects of risk management. To help assist in funding, PARMA offers scholarships for the conference from both PARMA as an association and through its chapters.
The Susan Eldridge PARMA Conference Scholarship is for eligible public entity employees. The scholarship includes the following:
- Hotel accommodations, at the lowest priced option for Conference Host Hotel, for a maximum of three-room nights;
- Round trip travel the IRS mileage rate and/or airfare, not to exceed $600. PARMA will consider written requests in which extenuating circumstances are presented that would justify travel expenses to exceed the maximum dollar limit. Such requests should be addressed to the PARMA Treasurer.
- Conference Registration and hotel will be paid directly by PARMA.
Each chapter that maintains a specified amount in their chapter treasury may also award a scholarship. If you are interested in either of these programs, simply complete one application form online and your application will be considered for the PARMA or Chapter scholarships.
