Meet
Paul Zeglovitch -
PARMA Member Spot Light
What inspired you to pursue a career in risk management?
After graduating college, I wanted a job that I could be partially "out in the field." I accepted a job as an auto liability claims adjuster with Transamerica Insurance and off I went. That was 27 years ago and along the way I found myself in the public entity arena, working with the County of Los Angeles and now cities throughout California. It was during my public entity experience, especially most recently with the California JPIA, that risk management became something that is part of my every day routine.
What do you specialize in?
My specialty is a wide variety of public entity liability claims. I am well versed in dangerous conditions, police liability, employment practices, and inverse condemnation.

Southern California PARMA CHAPTER
MARCH 9TH MEETING RECAP
By DeAnna Soria, Chapter Chair
Michael Murphy
, Fall Protection Specialist for 3M Fall Protection Business, served as the first speaker for our annual joint PASMA - PARMA meeting. With a presentation entitled "Fall Protection Awareness", Michael provided insight into the importance of utilizing fall protection in the workplace. He notated that the second leading cause of fatalities in the work place since 2015 are due to "falls"; this is workplace at large, not just construction or industrial, but in many other industries in the U.S. Michael emphasized OSHA General Industry Fall Protection Standards, 29 CFR Part 1910 with key points:
- Increases similarity between General Industry and
- Construction Industry fall protection standards
- Threshold remains at 4 ft.
- Fixed ladders require fall protection at 24 ft
- Fixed ladders installed after 11/19/18 are to be equipped with personal fall arrest system or ladder safety system (cages not acceptable on new ladders). Michael performed an on-site demonstration with a volunteer from the audience of the PASMA - PARMA meeting, emphasizing an actual drop simulation complete with harnessing equipment.

Dana Peterson, a partner in the L.A. and San Francisco offices of Seyfarth Shaw, LLP, was our second speaker at the meeting, presenting "Tips and Strategies for Effectively Managing Leaves".
With the passage of new paid sick leave laws and the expansion of employee leave rights, Dana navigated through the increasingly complex web of overlapping obligations an employer has when managing Workers' Compensation claims and leaves of absence, including when it is appropriate to terminate an employee. She provided insight of when and how the various laws intersect and provided practical guidelines for mitigating risk before, during, and after a leave. The audience was so engaged in her presentation, she spoke well over the time frame allowed due to all their questions on hand!
The next Lunch Meeting will be June 14, 2017.
The So Cal PARMA Chapter Committee looks forward to seeing all chapter members soon!
