Tell me about how you became a risk manager?
I was mentored by Barbara Goodwin, MBA, CPCU, ARM-E; Partner, Senior Vice President, Sales Executive, USI Insurance Services, starting in 2010, the year I joined PARMA. I was encouraged to pursue my ARM Professional Designation by my former boss Bill Stafford. I started on my Risk Management path by taking a 2-day Introduction to Risk Management seminar taught by Barbara Goodwin in August 2010. I then enrolled in the IEA’s 3-year ARM program and passed the exams for ARM 54, ARM 55 and ARM 56, receiving my certification in 2015.

“Hey Larry! There’s a few hot topics regarding risk issues happening in my industry, how do I suggest or request these topics are covered in upcoming educational sessions either at our chapter events that I love attending or in the PARMA webinars that are very informative.”
Good question! For your chapter I would first suggest you reach out to your chapter chair regarding your ideas for educational sessions or pitch your ideas to your chapter’s steering committee. All steering committees want ideas for educational sessions, especially if they’re current hot topics!
If your chapter doesn’t have a steering committee, this would be a great opportunity to suggest they form one. It would be even better if you had the time to spearhead that effort. There is not much to coordinating a group of individuals willing to have a lunch meeting whether in person or via virtual to discuss the educational plan and ongoing business of your chapter. Your chapter officer would be integral in selecting the committee members. I’m aware that some steering committees meet only once a year in person and continued communications throughout the year (if needed) to finalize efforts are virtual. A lot of chapter officers and Board members begin their volunteer efforts with PARMA on their chapter steering committees, so maybe this could be a first step for you in joining the great leadership of PARMA!
For webinar suggestions, simply send an email to PARMA’s Executive Director, Gloria Peterson at ed@parma.com, and it will get forwarded to the Board of Directors; they’re always looking for good ideas for educational sessions for PARMA members statewide.
Thanks again for your question!
