Part 2
"Flexibility is the New Currency for Companies"
I thought I was done writing on this topic after my last article. Then I got the latest issue of
HR Magazine and the cover story was called "The Turnover Tsunami."
I became a "prophet in my own time."
Then I got so many comments from all of you and I had to revisit this topic.
Many of you asked what could be done about this loss of talent and is it too late?
No it is not too late and there are things that can be done but you will need to use your people skills to do it NOT your tech skills. Here's what I mean by that:
1.Every Manager needs to
ask every person they
manage, "what do YOU
need?" "What can the
company do to make
your transition back
seamless?"
Yes I did say EVERY person working for you needs to be asked and listened to. That's what you get the increased salary for and the prestigious management title for; the work you do to manage your people.
2. Do what you can to
mitigate the issues
they share or find out where else they can go to get what they need. You need to show them they are important to you. They need to know they are not just a cog in your wheel.Remember "Hybrid"
as a model for how companies can work with its employees.
3.If they still want to leave treat them well. Don't treat them as if they are a Traitor! Treating people badly as they go only creates problems for you in the long run. And if you have many people leaving it can effect your sales. We've seen this with companies, a loss in market share because of how you treat your employees, is very real.
Lastly, demanding all your employees do the same thing is probably not a good idea in an employee market.
Tim Cook, CEO of Apple, demanded everyone return to the office on a certain date and 10,000 of his employees signed a letter explaining why he was wrong.
Tailoring or creating Hybrids is the right thing. Trust me you will save big bucks retaining
your talent and waste millions if you don't.
