Dates Announced for

Spring 2026 IBA Bird Surveys in

Watson Woods Riparian Preserve

By Leslie Loomis

Hello birders! Prescott Audubon continues its collaboration with Prescott Creeks--our spring survey dates have been set for Sunday, May 3 and Sunday, May 17, both at 7 am. We will count birds in three transects on the Preserve, with a maximum of four people on each of the three teams. You need to be comfortable walking off trail on uneven ground and have your own binoculars. Last Fall, we had a waiting list for both surveys, so sign up soon! Fill out the IBA Survey Interest Form at https://prescottcreeks.org/iba/ or email me at IBA@PrescottCreeks.org if you have any questions.

COMPENSATION – IT’S FOR THE BIRDS!

Bring your passion and your skills to help the Audubon Conservation effort. There is much to do.

Prescott Audubon will host an Earth Day table on April 18th, 10 to 2 to highlight declines in bird populations and how to help. Would you be interested in helping at the event?

Contact conservation@prescottaudubon.org if interested in helping with the Audubon Conservation effort.

The 2025 State of the Birds report shows continued rapid declines in North American bird populations. Both grassland and arid land species have lost more than 40 percent of their total populations since 1970. Check out the National Audubon website for the 2025 State of the Birds report.

2026 Burrowing Owl Relocation Project

Following the success of last year’s Burrowing Owl project, Prescott Audubon is again helping Wild at Heart (WAH), Prescott National Forest and Audubon SW with a project to relocate Burrowing Owls displaced by development to a second location in Paulden.

On March 21, about twenty volunteers constructed artificial burrows . The trenches had been dug ahead of time and protective chicken wire was already set in. The volunteers placed the burrow chambers (one-half of a 55-gallon drum) in the trenches and installed flexible tubing from the drums to where the burrow entrances will be.  With so many volunteers, the work went quickly. Later, a backhoe was used to fill in the trenches.

Future work days will involve setting up tents over the burrows and “hardening” the tents against predators like coyotes. Owls are placed in the tents for their first 4 weeks in a location, to promote site fidelity; volunteers will feed the owls daily for at least 5 weeks. The owls currently held by WAH are slated for warmer locations like Salome. Watch for future updates regarding when WAH has collected the owls for Paulden!
