Dates Announced for

Spring 2026 IBA Bird Surveys in

Watson Woods Riparian Preserve

By Leslie Loomis

Hello birders! Prescott Audubon continues its collaboration with Prescott Creeks--our spring survey dates have been set for Sunday, May 3 and Sunday, May 17, both at 7 am. We will count birds in three transects on the Preserve, with a maximum of four people on each of the three teams. You need to be comfortable walking off trail on uneven ground and have your own binoculars. Last Fall, we had a waiting list for both surveys, so sign up soon! Fill out the IBA Survey Interest Form at https://prescottcreeks.org/iba/ or email me at IBA@PrescottCreeks.org if you have any questions.

Christmas Bird Count 2025

Prescott Christmas Bird Count
Submitted by Sandy Klinikowski

On December 17, over 50 volunteers participated in the annual Prescott Christmas Bird Count. Twenty-two teams and several feeder watchers covered a variety of habitats within a 15 mile diameter circle around Prescott. We were fortunate to experience warm weather with little to no wind/rain the entire day. And although most of the volunteers indicated a low species count compared to previous years, the day was fabulous for birding!

Following the count, many gathered together at The Lookout for some food and fun holiday cheer. A big heartfelt thanks to all of our incredible volunteers for another successful Christmas bird count.

First Annual Black Canyon City Christmas Bird Count

Volunteers from the Prescott area joined birders from Black Canyon City for their first annual Christmas bird count. Three areas within the 15 mile diameter circle were chosen to kick off the count including:

*Two riparian corridors both lush Agua Fria River habitats, and

*Sonoran Desert slope on the toe of the Bradshaw Mountains within the southern Agua Fria National Monument.

Friendly birders, beautiful habitat and great weather made for a fun experience! Congratulations to Ann Hutchinson of Black Canyon Heritage Park and her team for a successful first CBC!

Chino Valley Christmas Bird Count
Submitted by Russell Duerksen

December 15, 2025, the day of the Chino Valley Christmas Count, was bright and sunny, with temperatures from the high thirties to over seventy. Over 25 birders on 9 teams were in the field. While conditions were great for birders, things have not been so great for the migratory birds in the Chino Valley Circle. We had several historical lows on seedeating birds. Total birds seen(4602) were down 30% from last year, and 40% from historical averages. Species diversity was average at 82. See you next year on the 21st (the first Monday after the 15th)

CONSERVATION MATTERS

HAPPY NEW YEAR 2026

It's time for Resolutions, so how about some for the birds!!

-Create bird friendly environment with native plants and water sources

-Install window safety decals to reduce collisions

-Turn off outdoor lights during migration times

-Keep cats indoors for their safety and for the safety of the birds

Black Canyon Heritage Park's Winterfest

Prescott Audubon will have an information table at the Black Canyon Heritage Park’s Winterfest, January 31, 2026, from 10 to 2. Come by, check out the vendors and take some time to bird around the park. The virtual Auction will open on January 28, 2026 and close on Tuesday February 11, 2016. Check out the website for additional information, blackcanyonheritagepark.org.

P. S. Looking for an enthusiastic birder to work the information table, all you need to do is talk about birds and birding. If you would like to help at the event please contact winterfest@prescottaudubon.org.
