Volunteers Needed

for 2026 Fall Migration IBA Bird Surveys in Watson Woods Riparian Preserve

Hello birders! It’s almost that time again! Prescott Audubon continues its collaboration with Prescott Creeks in doing bird surveys. The fall migration survey dates will be Sunday, August 30 and Sunday, September 13, both at 6:30 am. We will count birds in three transects on the Preserve, with a maximum of four people on each of the three teams. You need to be comfortable walking off trail on uneven ground and have your own binoculars. There is sometimes a waiting list, so sign up soon! Northern Harrier Nest Update

Sadly, we hear that the Northern Harriers who attempted to nest by the south shore of Willow Lake were not successful this year. It would have been a first for Yavapai County. We do not know what caused the nest failure, and we can hope for next year. We appreciate that the City put up signs notifying folks about this sensitive area, and we thank all those who chose to walk and bird elsewhere while the area was restricted.

On a brighter note, Willow Lake has hosted two unusual raptor species lingering along the lake this year, the Rough-legged Hawk this past winter/spring and the Northern Harriers who stayed past the winter months and attempted to nest. What's next?
