Dates Announced for

Spring 2026 IBA Bird Surveys in

Watson Woods Riparian Preserve

By Leslie Loomis

Hello birders! Prescott Audubon continues its collaboration with Prescott Creeks--our spring survey dates have been set for Sunday, May 3 and Sunday, May 17, both at 7 am. We will count birds in three transects on the Preserve, with a maximum of four people on each of the three teams. You need to be comfortable walking off trail on uneven ground and have your own binoculars. Last Fall, we had a waiting list for both surveys, so sign up soon! Fill out the IBA Survey Interest Form at https://prescottcreeks.org/iba/ or email me at IBA@PrescottCreeks.org if you have any questions.

Upper Verde River Important Bird Area (IBA) Summary of 2025 Survey Results

Prescott Audubon volunteers conduct several surveys along the Upper Verde River near Paulden in order to help this beautiful riparian corridor retain its designation as an Important Bird Area. Three surveys during spring and fall document both the usage of the area by migrating birds and the transition from winter residents to summer residents. The Chino Valley Christmas Bird Count in December records wintering birds.

Willow Lake Community Event

On Saturday, Feb 21, Prescott City hosted a successful outreach event about the plan being developed for managing Willow Lake. PAS has been involved in this planning process, both on the steering committee and on the recreation committee.  This event served to gather feedback from the community and to share information about many aspects of the lake. Think flood control, vegetation, signage, access points, boating, environmental quality, etc.

Our primary interest is in the "Willow Woods" portion, the SW part of the lake, including Willow Creek and the cottonwood forests there. So many of the community members at the Saturday event were PAS members and supporters! Thanks to all of you who were there for voicing our interests and concerns!

From PAS Leadership

Thank you to Sharon Andersen and Cathy Severson for representing PAS at the Black Canyon Heritage Park Winterfest.

Note: The March WON at the HCNH will not be streamed or recorded. HCNH asks for participants to register for planning purposes. Please do not let this dissuade you from attending.

PAS could always use more volunteers.

We can find a place for you whatever your interest.

The next PAS Board Meeting is scheduled for May 8, 11:00AM, at The Lookout conference room. All are welcome to attend.

Please visit the PAS FB Group page for more information, as well as fabulous photos and articles from Walt Anderson
