PASC END OF SUMMER 2024 NEWSLETTER | |
If you step outside in Southeast Michigan right now, Summer is still hot and certainly going strong. Yet we can already feel the Fall changes working their way in. Nights are getting longer, school is, or is about to be, back in session and even some leaves are starting a small but noticeable change in color.
Change is part of life, but for some the immediate transition Fall symbolizes, particularly in dramatic temperate regions of the US like Michigan, can be complicated for some to navigate. Some love the colors of Fall, the longer nights, and the changing seasons. But for others the dramatic changes can produce anxiety, and feel a bit gloomy. Even the word ‘Fall’ itself can feel a bit like defeat. But in these moments it is helpful to mentally step outside the immediate and try to consider the importance of the longer cycle of change that Fall begins.
Fall is a time when we focus on trees, our essential symbiotic partners. And for a tree Fall is a moment of preparation for the future. Shedding it's leaves is a tree's act of self-protection and renewal. Because water expands when frozen if a tree's leaves didn’t fall they would freeze, expand and rupture the cells of each leaf making them useless for photosynthesis, the trees way of producing energy. A tree also drops its leaves to secure itself against potential damage from ice and snow that could accumulate on the tree’s leaves weighing them down and potentially breaking limbs. Leaves by the Fall season have also undergone a lot of abuse, from insects eating them, diseases, and other damage. Thus, Like a haircut, a new coat of paint, or a trip to the nail spa, shedding leaves allows the tree to start new in spring. And the fallen leaves are never discarded or wasted, the nutrients from the decaying leaves break down on the ground and help new plants to grow. In this way Fall is a reset, a pause that marks the beginning of regeneration, a moment when the tree reminds us, to take a minute to stop, breathe, and contemplate our future, to emerge renewed, refined and powerful.
PASC has a busy Fall ahead. We have many fun events happening in September so mark your calendars and join in.
