PASC PARTICIPATES IN THIS YEAR'S CREATIVE GROWTH CONFERENCE

June started with a trip to Oakland California, where PASC Art Advisor, Hannah Lilly and PASC Program Manager Anthony Marcellini represented at the Creative Growth Conference, “Advancing Our Future Together”. The goal of this conference, which is now in its third year, was to bring together staff from progressive or supported art studios for disabled adults from across the United States, to network, share ideas, upsets and successes. This was an intensive four day conference with presentations ranging from Disability Justice and ableism, to Person Centered Thinking, to staff Self Care, to participating in Art Fairs.

As part of the conference PASC’s Anthony Marcellini led a discussion on strategies for developing artist’s practices, where three studios, Visionaries and Voices, Creative Growth and Tiera Del Sol, presented on the trajectories of a couple of their senior artists focused on how each studio helped them get started, how they established their practice, and how they have taken their practice to an advanced level. The goal was to understand how each studio supports artists through all stages of development, encouraging experimentation and exploration, and helping each individual build a professional practice.

ELECTRIC RELAXATION at PASC DETROIT POP UP GALLERY

On June 10, PASC launched its second PASC Detroit Pop-Up Gallery exhibition, Electric Relaxation, curated by Anita Bates and Tom Pyrzewski. This show featured a range of artworks from large paintings to small drawings, by Jirard Bond, Stanley Brown, Alyce Carter, Donovan Clay, Robert Duncombe, Devontae Hampton, DeRon Hudson, Darlene Mahan, Tracy Mason, Stefan Payne, Debbie Osteen, Alsendoe Owens, Jocelyn Rice, Renee Rogan, and Ray Smith. This was another successful opening, with good audience attendance, fantastic cookies from steps Culinary Arts Program, and several artworks sold. PASC artists from all three studios, who were not able to make it to the opening, traveled to the gallery in June and explained their artwork to their peers. The show is up through July 10, 2022.

Our next exhibition, Affections, opens Friday, July 15, 6-8pm at our PASC Detroit Pop-Up Gallery. The show is curated by Bridget Finn, partner at the gallery Reyes | Finn. And in other exhibition news three PASC artists, Manuel Bart, Bobby Brooks and Thomas Saunders, will have artwork featured in an upcoming exhibition Everyday Heroes at Circle Contemporary in Chicago. Circle Contemporary is the gallery of the Chicago based progressive art studio Arts of Life.

JENN SCHANZ VISITS PASC DETROIT POP UP GALLERY

We had a nice visit from Jenn Schanz at Detroit’s WXYZ-TV Channel 7, who came to the PASC Detroit Pop Up Gallery to interview PASC artist Stanley Brown, his mother Cynthia Brown, STEP’s CEO Brent Mikulski and PASC Program Manager Anthony Marcellini. Watch the profile on the WXYZ website.

We have been doing several events to engage with the community. On June 18 and 19, PASC had a table at Jazzin at the Vanity, a street fair put on by Jefferson East, on the South East side of Detroit, where we met members of the community where our future Detroit studio will be located. And on August 6-7 we will have a tent at the Belle Isle Art Fair, come out and visit us.

IMAGINARY CITIES IN THE STUDIO

And in the studios PASC Art Advisors have been supporting PASC artists to experiment with sculpture and model making. From cardboard, papier Mâché and hot glue entire cities have been growing out of our PASC Westland studios.
