Education Committee 


The Education committee will hold its next meeting via Zoom. Date TBD. Thank you to all that joined us so far this year.

 

Ethics course – Watch for email blast for date and time. Currently, we are planning this course to be in person.

 

Scholarship – The committee will discuss the Scholarship program for April 2023.

 

Education – Date(s) will be set for Education Day at our next meeting.

 

We are looking for topics for the Spring 2023 Education Day. If you have any suggestions, please let us know. Please email Jacque Bateman jacque.k.bateman@gmail.com & pasheducation@gmail.com  if you would like to participate in future Education Committee meetings. Revenue Committee

The Revenue Committee will be holding their monthly meeting on January 19, 2023 at the Whitehall Hotel from 3:00 pm to 4:00 pm. 


We will be hosting Kathy Woody, speaking on Climate-Related Energy Technology 


Overview of climate technology, description of how certain emerging technologies are relevant to oil & gas and how the recent Inflation Reduction Act is impacting both the scale and deployment of these technologies as well as the ability of corporations to monetize the incentives.

2.      Understand technical requirements for incentives offered in the Inflation Reduction act

3.      Describe how the Inflation Reduction act will impact scale and deployment of certain technologies

Audit Committee, Joint Interest Committee

& Financial Reporting Committee

Happy New Year and welcome to 2023! The Joint Interest, Audit and Financial Reporting & Tax Committees will be having a joint meeting on Thursday, January 19, 2023 at the Whitehall Hotel from 3 to 4:30 pm. Our guest speaker will be Danielle Supkis Cheek, who will be presenting on the topic of Innovations in Data Processing and Communications in Accounting and Audit

 

The digitization of the finance function has created an explosion of data that can exceed traditional approaches to analyze the data. Further, such volumes of information have created a new opportunity as well as complexity in how to present data.

 

This session will cover:

  • Advances in accounting and audit technology, such as AI
  • Data visualizations as a method of data communication
  • Appropriate safeguards to be able to rely upon technology in a safe and ethical manner

 

Danielle Supkis Cheek is the Vice President of Strategy and Industry Relations at MindBridge. Danielle earned her Bachelors from Rice University and her Master of Science in Accountancy from the University of Virginia.

 

She is a Certified Public Account (CPA) in the State of Texas, a Certified Fraud Examiner (CFE), and a Certified Valuation Analyst (CVA).

 

Danielle is the immediate past Chair of the PCPS Technical Issues Committee with the American Institute for CPAs and is the US Representative to the IFAC Small and Medium Practitioners Committee. She is on the IT Services Task Force to the Professional Ethics Executive Committee and the Technology Experts Group to the International Ethics Standards Board. She is an at-large member of AICPA Council.

 

She is an 8-time (2014-2021) 40 under 40 by the CPA Practice Advisor, and was the Houston CPA’s Society’s Distinguished Member to the Profession for 2019. She was also the first woman to receive the AICPA’s Outstanding Young CPA of the Year Award in Honor of Maximo in 2016 and is a 5-time Most Powerful Women in Accounting by CPA Practice Advisor and AICPA. Danielle was also named as a 2019 Houston Business Journal Women Who Means Business.

 

She is also part-time faculty at Rice University’s Jones School of Business teaching accounting for entrepreneurs to undergrads and data analytics to the Masters of Accountancy (MAcc) students.

Golf and Picnic Committee

The current date for the Tournament and Picnic is May 15th. A meeting will be held at 4pm after the Audit/Revenue/JI Committee meetings. Emily Boone will be sending an email to everyone in the committee.

Dinner Speaker/Topic 

Please join us in welcoming Michael Osina, Partner at Grant Thornton LLP, along with Tracey Reilly Baird, Managing Director at Grant Thornton, LLP. Mr. Osina will be presenting a 2022 Year End Tax Update, and Ms. Baird will be presenting issues surrounding tax credits.


Mr. Osina will discuss some of the new tax legislation from 2022 and what to expect in 2023. He will also cover some of the hot areas of tax that affect financial reporting. Ms. Baird will be covering Energy Tax Credits/Opportunities under an IRA, Wage/Apprenticeship Requirements, Section 45Q Carbon Credit, Superfund Tax, and an update on Section 174.


By the end of his presentation, you will be able to:


1) Understand recent legislative changes

2) Identify how certain tax issues affect financial reporting

3) Identify some tax credits and their application

4) Understand recent Section 174 changes


Michael is the Tax Practice Leader of the Houston office of Grant Thornton LLP. He is also the Energy Industry Leader for tax.  Michael has over 20 year of public accounting experience. He began his career in international tax with an emphasis on the oil, gas, and energy industry. After moving into the federal tax practice, Michael continues to specialize in the oil & gas industry, more specifically the upstream and midstream sectors. His technical focus has been corporate tax, spending significant time on public company ASC 740 projects. He has been with Grant Thornton for 18 years.  


Michael is a member of the American Institute of Certified Public Accountants and the Texas Society of Certified Public Accountants. He holds a Bachelor of Business Administration – The University of Texas at Austin and Master in Professional Accounting – The University of Texas at Austin.


Tracey is a Managing Director in Grant Thornton’s Strategic Federal Tax Services (SFTS) practice, a dedicated team of experienced tax professionals who focus on certain areas of federal tax law where appropriate planning can help clients achieve significant savings. Tracey has the capabilities to provide valuable SFTS advice to help clients select, impairment and manage appropriate tax strategies.


Tracey has more than eleven years of experience in tax advisory services for public and privately held clients. She provides services related to inventory (UNICAP), the research and development tax credit, tangible property regulations (repairs), fixed assets, tax accounting methods, and other federal, state, and international tax matters. Tracey’s experience prior joining Grant Thornton’s SFTS practice also includes three years of mergers & acquisitions tax consulting (buy-side and sell-side tax due diligence, as well as tax structure modeling). Tracey’s project experiences include: performing inventory analysis projects, including implementation of the final UNICAP regulations; conducting repair and maintenance analysis to determine proper classification of costs incurred in acquiring, maintaining and improving tangible property; reviewing and helping clients adopt correct and advantageous accounting methods; cost segregation analysis for property reclassification; and assisting clients with the calculation, documentation and substantiation of R&D tax credits.


Tracey has served a wide variety of industries and clients, including those in the software, financial services, private equity, engineering, manufacturing, oil and gas, chemical, transportation, retail, healthcare and medical device industries. Tracey has served a wide variety of industries and clients, including those in the software, financial services, private equity, engineering, manufacturing, oil and gas, chemical, transportation, retail, healthcare and medical device industries. 


Tracey holds a Bachelor’s of Business Administration degree in Information and Operations Management from Texas A&M University (Cum Laude), as well as a Doctor of Jurisprudence degree from South Texas College of Law. Tracey is a licensed Attorney in Texas.
