Patent Palooza! 2023 was held on October 3 in the Gatton Student Center. Over 100 UK faculty and staff innovators were recognized and celebrated for their accomplishments in FY 2023 for patents, licenses and options, copyrights, SBIR/STTR and completing Launch Blue's UAccel program.
Remarks were provided by Ian McClure, Associate Vice President for Research, Innovation and Economic Impact, Dr. Lisa Cassis, Vice President for Research, and President Eli Capilouto. Attendees were the first ones to view the latest "I Am A UK Innovator" compilation video.
After remarks, Taunya Phillips, Director, Office of Technology Commercialization recognized UK Innovators and their Colleges and Centers. Linda Dwoskin and Chang-Guo Zhan were recognized as 2022 National Academy of Inventors (NAI) Fellows and Kunlei Liu and Chang-Guo Zhan received special recognition for receiving their 20th (Liu) and 30th (Zhan) milestone patents.
It was a wonderful event with networking, food and celebration. We look forward to seeing you in Fall 2024 when we recognize our UK faculty and staff innovators for their FY 2024 accomplishments.

UK, PARTNERS AWARDED $12 MILLION TO ADVANCE BIOMEDICAL INNOVATION, ENTREPRENEURSHIP | |

The University of Kentucky and its partners at four other institutions have been awarded $12 million from the National Institutes of Health (NIH) to launch a new hub focused on accelerating real-world impact of biomedical innovations through education, mentorship and financial support for entrepreneurs.
The Mid-South Research Evaluation and Commercialization Hub (REACH) spans a four-state network of Tennessee, Kentucky, Mississippi and Virginia.

The Metals Innovation Initiative (MI2) hosted their inaugural MI2 Annual Conference, focused this year on “Factory of the Future” in Louisville, Kentucky, on September 5-6. The conference was well-attended by University of Kentucky (UK) faculty and staff, including members of UK Innovate. The “Factory of the Future” was built around the Smart Factory concept. The Smart Factory is a system that collects data on production and uses it to improve processes and innovation in manufacturing. The event featured a variety keynotes, breakout discussions, roundtables and presentations from startups, convening leaders from Kentucky’s metals industry alongside a wide range of partners and experts. | |

UK INNOVATE STAFF ATTENDS UIDP
Innovation Connect Managers Chelsea Ex-Lubeskie and Alexa Narel attended UIDP's conference in Irvine at the University of California on October 3-5.
The theme of this year's conference was "Discovery and Innovation through Partnership." UIDP's focus is in "strengthening University-Industry partnerships."
The conference's session gave Chelsea and Alexa key takeaways to create research and university partnerships, share problems and solutions in the industry and create new partnerships.

UK INNOVATE PRESENTS AT COMMERCE LEX BOARD EVENT HOSTED BY UK RESEARCH
UK Research hosted the Commerce Lex Board of Directors at the Health Kentucky Research Building on October 23.
Dr. Serenity Wright, Associate Director for Social Innovation, discussed social innovation and community engaged research while Landon Borders, Executive Director, UK Innovation Connect, provided an overview of UK Innovate and Wright discussed social innovation and community engaged research.

LAUNCH BLUE UACCEL QUICK START + I-CORPS
This program is open to faculty, graduate students, postdoctoral researchers, and staff from institutions of higher education and founders of tech-based startup companies (who are working with a university researcher or are looking to partner with a university researcher).
Candidates affiliated with the University of Kentucky or a Kentucky Commercialization Ventures partner institution must submit, or have already submitted, an Invention Report or Idea Report to the University of Kentucky Office of Technology Commercialization or to Kentucky Commercialization Ventures.
Spring application opens November 6.
