Clarification of CEU requirements for existing PATH Intl. Therapeutic Riding Instructors transitioning to the PATH Intl. CTRI Credential

This communication addresses questions specific to the Continuing Education Unit (CEU) requirements for current PATH Intl. certified instructors considering the transition to the new PATH Intl. Certified Therapeutic Riding Instructor (CTRI) credential. In this document are key term definitions and clarification of the CEUs needed to complete this transition. Please keep in mind each transitioning instructor is also required to take a 25 question test in addition to meeting the CEU requirements as outlined below.

Key Definitions
Transition: The process of renewing an existing PATH Intl. Therapeutic Riding Instructor certification to establish the new PATH Intl. CTRI credential

Maintenance: The process of maintaining the PATH Intl. CTRI credential once having successfully completed the transition process

CEU Requirements
What are the CEU requirements for PATH Intl. Therapeutic Riding Instructors in good standing to transition to the new PATH Intl. CTRI credential?
When a currently certified instructor chooses to transition to the PATH Intl. CTRI credential, he/she will submit documentation that the current CEU requirements for a PATH Intl. Certified Therapeutic Riding Instructor have been met: 20 or more hours of continuing education * within the past 12 months, including:
  • Disability Education (DE): a minimum of 6 hours
  • Certification Core Requirements (CR): a minimum of 2 hours
  • General Continuing Education (CE): a minimum of 12 hours
*Please note these CEU requirements are exactly the same as required for renewal of the current certification.

What are the CEU maintenance requirements for the new PATH Intl. CTRI credential?
A new PATH Intl. CTRI credential will be valid for two years. When a PATH Intl. CTRI credential comes up for maintenance, ( two years after the initial transition or earning certification) the CTRI will need to submit documentation of 20 hours of continuing education taken within the past 24 months, including:
  • Disability Education (DE): a minimum of 12 hoursCertification
  • Core Requirements (CR): a minimum of 4 hours
  • General Continuing Education (CE): a minimum of 4 hours

Transition Deadlines
Registered Therapeutic Riding Instructors
PATH Intl. Certified Registered Therapeutic Riding Instructors may choose to transition to the PATH Intl. CTRI credential when completing renewal any time after July of 2019, but must do so no later than December 31, 2020.  PATH Intl. will no longer recognize the Registered Level Instructor Certification after December 31, 2020.

Advanced and Master Therapeutic Riding Instructors
PATH Intl. Certified Advanced and Master Therapeutic Riding Instructors may choose to transition to the PATH Intl. CTRI credential at any time after July of 2019. Doing so will not affect a current advanced or master designation/title but instead grant an additional designation of “PATH Intl. CTRI certification ”  ( For example: “PATH Intl. Advanced Therapeutic Riding Instructor with PATH Intl. CTRI certification” or “PATH Intl. Master Therapeutic Riding Instructor with PATH Intl. CTRI certification.”)  The transitioning CEU requirements for advanced and master instructors are the same as those stated above for the registered instructors. This additional designation will also qualify advanced and master instructors with the CTRI designation to serve as a supervisor for new CTRI candidates and allows for them to sign-off on candidate prerequisites.

Please contact Bret Maceyak with any questions regarding the PATH Intl. CTRI credential and PATH Intl. certification processes.

Sincerely,
The PATH Intl. Credentialing Council
