Liverpool Troop 620 to plant 1,000 trees in ‘Tree-a-thon’
|
|
While hiking across a creek at Morgan Hill State Forest with his fellow Boy Scouts, Caleb Howard lost his footing. He clutched a nearby tree to keep his balance. “I jokingly said, ‘Hug a tree and save a life,’” said Howard, who is a member of BSA Troop 620 in Liverpool and a sophomore at Cicero-North Syracuse High School.
Thus the troop’s next service project was born: ‘Tree-a-thon,’ a fundraiser to plant 1,000 trees at Graham Park in Pitcairn, New York.
Troop 620 has already raised $1,100 — more than enough to plant 1,000 trees but they aren’t stopping there.

SCOUTS NEEDED TO JOIN ROTARY’S
“GREAT LAKES WATERSHED CLEANUP”
|
|
The Great Lakes Watershed Cleanup initiative is an effort that has grown from a Rotary District 7090 service project covering a small portion of Lake Ontario and Erie to a multi-district plan to focus Rotarians’ attention to all 5 of the Great Lakes and streams and waterways feeding them.
Cleanups from numerous NGO’s, community groups, and individual volunteers are critical to reducing the amount of garbage that collects in our watersheds each year.
So far 15 Rotary Districts, 100’s of Clubs, and thousands of Rotary volunteers have agreed to participate.
The Great Lakes Watershed events will be held between Saturday, April 17, and Saturday, April 24 to coincide with the celebration of Earth Day, on April 22.
If you or your Scout Unit would like to join a Rotary Club as they strive to educate the public to the importance of protecting our waterways and to instill a sense of stewardship towards our Great Lakes, kindly reach out to a Rotary Club near you!

National Youth Leadership Training (NYLT) is an exciting, action-packed program designed to provide all 13 to 20 year old youth members of the Boy Scouts of America with leadership skills and experience they can use in their home units and in other situations that demand leadership of self and others. Training of our youth leadership is important in helping the youth and their units to grow. Over the years the Boy Scouts of America has refined and developed this week-long training experience. Youth from your unit are invited and highly encouraged to participate.
NYLT is open to all Scouts BSA members 13 and older as well as all Venturing Scouts and Sea Scouts. Please remember that this includes both male and female.

This year, our focus is “weird science”. By participating in day camp, the scouts will learn about the scientific process and how science is used in everyday life. They will have the opportunity to explore beyond the mundane, and perform wacky and fascinating experiments, while at the same time having fun, exploring our natural world, and fostering lasting friendships.
