Dear Scouter,
I am a proud product of Wood Badge class N3-373-18 and came to it reluctantly. I had what I thought was a rich and complete Scouting experience already - Den Leader, Pack Committee Chair, Assistant Scoutmaster, Council President, even several national positions. I arrogantly had avoided Wood Badge thinking “What could it possibly teach me that I don’t already know?” I decided to finally take the course out of a guilty obligation to participate in the very thing I was promoting to others.
I have never been so glad to have been so wrong. Wood Badge was transformative. It took many things I knew and helped me learn to better apply them for the youth we serve. It taught me new things and I gained a deeper appreciation for unit leadership - the level where real Scouting actually happens. Learning by doing the very things we ask of our Scouts was a fantastic experience. Most of all it was a chance to have fun, forge friendships that will last a lifetime and was a great reminder of why we do what we do.
My only regret is that I didn’t take the course 15 years earlier. Whether you’re a new Den Leader figuring out how to hold the attention of a bunch of seven-year olds or a veteran Scouter of many years, take Wood Badge. You will love it, you will learn new skills and strategies for success and most importantly the Scouts you work with will benefit from your effort. It is time well spent. You should never stop learning.

Citizenship in Society
The new merit badge encourages Scouts to explore important topics around diversity, equity, inclusion and ethical leadership and learn why these qualities are important in society and in Scouting. Beginning July 1, 2022, the Citizenship in Society merit badge will be required for any youth seeking to achieve the prestigious Eagle Scout rank.
Application for merit badge counselors are being accepted now, but this isn't your run of the mill process. Counselors will be put through a rigorous review process and once accepted will be required to attend a special training. Please contact the Service Center for more info.
