Mile Swim BSA Award Updated for Summer 2024

Based on feedback from BSA Aquatics personnel at camps across the country, the revised Mile Swim BSA award is now focusing on improving swimming stroke effectiveness and efficiency, especially for individuals looking to enhance their skills. Most Scouts who can walk or bike on level ground for about an hour without stopping will likely have enough stamina to swim a mile. There are also many other Scouts BSA programs that encourage and develop regular exercise. The purpose of the Mile Swim BSA award is to boost confidence and enhance water competency.

UPDATED BSA Mile Swim Award Requirements:

1. Successfully complete the BSA swimmer test: Jump feet first into water over the head in depth, level off, and begin swimming. Swim 75 yards in a strong manner using one or more of the following strokes: sidestroke, breaststroke, trudgen, or crawl; then swim 25 yards using an easy, resting backstroke. The 100 yards must be completed in one swim without stops and must include at least one sharp turn.

2. Learn through discussion and application how skill, stamina, stroke selection, and pace influence distance swimming.

3. Pre-qualify for the mile by either swimming continuously for ¼ mile or otherwise demonstrating ability to the satisfaction of a counselor approved by the local council.

4. Swim one mile under safe conditions over a course approved by the counselor supervising the swim.

COMMUNITY ACTIVITIES

Griffin’s Guardians needs an enthusiastic, carpenter or group of young carpenters to construct (45) wooden house structures. Each house will be made with 1x3 board. Each house needs to be structurally sound and stand on a flat surface table. The houses need to be sanded down so there are no sharp edges.

The houses will be used for the upcoming Eighth Annual Gold Tie Gala, a formal fundraising event at the Marriott Downtown Syracuse where over 500 guests attend to help support our mission.

Please contact Christine Dallmann at christine@griffinsguardians.org or call her at (315)415-2689 for more details.

The items will need to be finished by August 15th, 2024
